New Sonos Endorsed Drive is out!

And its what everyone thought, limited.

Features of the new Sonos endorsed driver include the following:

Ability to start a Sonos favorite
Displaying now playing metadata
Transport control
Volume control
Grouping Sonos zones together

Browsing and searching for music as well as managing favorites must be handled through the Sonos application. The Sonos app experience is very personal and generally focused on the mobile device whereas the new endorsed Control4 driver is more conducive to use with keypads, television on-screen-displays, and Control4 touch screens.

I know, it will be interesting to see how many are shocked by this.

now if Only C4 could have a proxied way to launch the app. so that when i pick sonos as a source it has an option to auto-open the sonos app

The real question is...Does the other one continue to exist, does it get killed off, shut down, updated, no support anymore. This the part missing from the post of the new driver.

IMHO, just dies a slow death

So does this new one allow you to select media services from the touch panel? I.e. Spotify, choose a Spotify playlist, select a track to play from the Spotify playlist?

please read my original post, the answer is no

Sorry. Your original post confused me because you switch to talking about the Sonos App.

I am now reading your post as the New Control4 Sonos integration supports the following functions:

1. Select Sonos as a source

2. Play, Pause, Next, Previous

3. Sell Sonos or Control4 on eBay

(3rd step being optional)

I believe you said Heos cannot pass along announcements?  I have a mixed environment, a few sonos Play speakers and then a few rooms wired with speakers feeding back to a c4 amp+matrix set up with a sonos connect.  so in any of those rooms I can send announcements which is critical since my doorbell plays as a sonos announcement.  I cannot do that with Heos, right?  I could send a control4 wav file I guess if I got rid of the smaller speakers in those 3 rooms and just hard wired real speakers in the ceiling, then I could use the C4 announcement agent for the doorbell and heos to distribute via their connect like device (link i think?).  But then I need an amp for 3 rooms so likely an 8 channel/4 stereo output type of amp.  that amp + 2 Heos links....plus the in ceiling speakers, wiring, etc...going to add up fast I think.  If I could pick up a few Heos 3s and a Link I would but I think I am going to lose out on announcements?

A link to open the sonos app would be helpful as would being able to start in the sonos app and having it automatically turn on the room.  The rest I can come to live with as we generally only use favorites anyway. The sonos app has always been better for searching and exploring.

i have not experimented with Heos and announcements yet.  You might be able to get a sudo announcement.  IE on announcement agent programming; when the announcement plays have it play a heos favorite which could be the same file?

any testing you can do in your free time would be most appreciated.  I am stuck with Sonos until I can find an option that allows for announcements and in quickly firing scenario since these are doorbells, so do not want someone to ring and it takes 5 seconds to get to my speakers.  Getting 3-4 pairs of speakers, another amp, etc may get costly if I had to hardwire all of my speakers for the native c4 announcement driver.  Any cost effective multi channel/room amps I could use that work well within C4?  From time to time I see 12 channel Episode amps for $500 on Ebay.  Maybe something by AudioSource?  I could get some Denon Heos Links into my C4 matrix and replace the 3-4 rooms with Sonos speakers with in ceiling/in corner type speakers if I can make it affordable.

Likely will not be able to do any testing this week. but can try in the future.

This just gotta be a joke right !?

Sonos/C4 bring out a new driver that only selects the source, in this case Sonos, within a C4 device/OSD and to select/browse the music I have to start the Sonos App !?

For user friendliness and integration this scores an astronomical -13 out in score range from 1-10.

And this after they release the "new" 8.1.x driver in 2016 - absolutely mind blowing

having it automatically turn on the room.

Actually, this option remains - of course as it's set per driver, it would require one Sonos for every room you want this in, so functionality of this would at least in part depend on your setup.
