jfh
What do people use/recommend with C4 these days?. Had Ecobee and don’t/didn’t really like it. Looking at Google Nest Learning but don’t know other options.

GregCAMS
Control4/Aprilaire thermostats. Coupled with wired remote sensor so all thermostats hidden away in central area. 4 years 0 issues. I had Google Nest and was a pain from integration standpoint and lost connection every 6-9 months. Used those prior to switching to C4. Cyknight
Reliability wise, Control4's own t-stat. Not overly pretty no doubt. Functions wise, Ecobee, or Honeywell with the driver from driver central works well.
chopedogg88
I would do the Control4 thermostats for reliability, unless you wanted the built-in Alexa functionality of Ecobee
msgreenf
Or all the energy savings and smarts that are part of ecobee

jfh
Appreciate the input. I think I’m going to go with the Ecobee. The Alexa function alone will be a big plus for me because of where this will be located and though I’m not a big fan of the interface I am used to it
Don Cohen
For whatever it's worth, I have 2 Aprilaire C4 thermostats downstairs, and an Ecobee upstairs. In terms of reliability, I much prefer the Control4 one. The Ecobee sporadically loses its Control4 link, requiring repairing them, which is a bit of a pain. It happens less frequently now than a year or so ago, but it still happens. The Ecobee is also a bit more challenging to precisely program with Control4, which doesn't seem to be able to access all of the settings configured in the Ecobee itself. Oh, and I can use Alexa to make voice adjustments in the Aprilaire thermostats as well, so I don't see an Ecobee advantage there. I do prefer the 'look' of the Ecobee, but will take function over appearance any day.
msgreenf
But look at what you can do in the Ecobee app. Far more programming available then on the Aprilaire…

I guess for my relatively simple needs, I have what I need in the Aprilaire thermostats, and perhaps am not leveraging the Ecobee's capabilities as much as I might be able to. The sporadic and unpredictable loss of connectivity is the main thing that bugs me with the Ecobee. I've had these about 4 years, with quite a few occurrences over that time period (probably 10 to 20 total?). With Aprilaire, I've had 2 incidents only, in only one of them, where I lost connectivity, and the only thing to bring it back was removing the thermostat and popping its batteries to reset it. msgreenf
Yeah, I do think most of the ecobee connection issues with ecobee API are fixed. Haven’t seen them at all since I moved in Nov to my new house. Ecobees smart recovery, smart occupancy and other features are FAR superior to Aprilaires. Don Cohen
I'm not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure I've had a disconnect in the last few months. But it is definitely better than it used to be. I'll have to look at that Smart Recovery function, since I don't know what that is, or how I would benefit from it.
msgreenf
Smart Recovery means that if you have a schedule that says at 4pm you return home and then temp changes - then it will start recovery at maybe 3:30 so that at 4 it’s at the temp you wanted Don Cohen

Smart Recovery = Progressive Recovery = called a million different things depending on the manufacturer - and almost any thermostat capable on integrating into C4 has it (Including C4's own, Honeywell, Ecobee, Nest). And yes it means it will target to BE at the temperature of your schedule instead of starting to heat TO that temperature. Honestly it's like touting your brand of car has powered windows these days. c44me
Have used all of the above. The C4 unit was nice but dating looking (read ugly). The Nest was great but has become a pain. The Ecobee has been the best, not least of which is the remote sensor ability which nobody else has? msgreenf and Thirs 1
