LimitelessLED

Hey guys,
So every since seeing the quirky thread, and seeing a lot more commercially available smart products, I have wanted to come up with a solution for my theatre, bar area and steam shower to have colored lighting.

So this obviously brought me to Phillips Hue, which there already appears to be a driver for (although not sure if it does colors?).

But.... Wow is that stuff expensive! And in my opinion, needlessly expensive.

So I have been doing a bunch of research and have found A LOT of people talking about LimitlessLED

http://www.limitlessled.com/dev/

At first, I was skeptical on the quality. At 1/10th the cost of Hue right now, is it really any good?
All of the reviews so far have been VERY positive. I am about to pick up a pair to try it out.

The real question is though, they have a full SDK, so has anyone/is anyone/does anyone want to look into developing a driver for C4?

the milight also looks like it could be very promising for various lighting solutions and is readily available inexpensively on ebay.

there was another board member who had mentioned he was working on a driver for it back in may but not any mention of it since unfortunately :(

especially since i stupidly went out and bought the hardware in anticipation of the driver being released. oh well, on the back shelf it goes ;)

slightly different ballpark I believe nut  thanks for the suggestion though. they may work very well but they are also about 8x the price for the controller as the milight and limitless.

i don't want to speak for badjesus but I believe what he and I are looking for is something sub $50 controller that control inexpensive RGB lightsrips like available on ebay for around $10 or $20?

thanks.

Milight looks even better!!

I am surprised this is not a more common feature that people are wanting. No one interested in tackling a driver for either of these?

I would love to have this in my game room / theatre.

I saw Jackstone's thread and it looks like an awesome product and an amazing driver but totally not what I would be looking for.
I am looking for a solution that I can add to existing fixtures. Why retrofit and re-wire when it isn't needed. Not to mention, the cost is 10 times higher.

Limitless bulbs are sub $30, how is that more than retrofitting? And how do you retrofit a nice table lamp. LimitlessLED driver is totally a great idea. The documentation is all there, it's basic udp commands. I may have to give it a whirl when I get some time.

I was speaking about Hue and no nothing about limitless.

Yeah, Hue would be more expensive, which is why we are talking about limitless or milight.

They are basically identical products. The only difference in the marketing behind it and the companies they have teamed up with. I am surprised more people AREN'T interested in these products for how popular Hue seems to be.

I may be out to lunch, because I have not personally tried these products yet, but from everyone I have talked to that has (and has also tried Hue) there is really no difference.

If you have the skill to do this, I can guarantee I will buy it from you if it works.

I will pay $100 for this driver.

I have done a bunch of programming before. I should probably start looking in to C4 and seeing what I can do. I know NOTHING about it at this point but do have experience (albeit very light) with VB, C#, PHP and Python. Just have no idea where to get the information or where to even start with C4.

Hmm. What bugs me about the limiteless is it's limited (pun intended) info..

I see no Lumens info, no xxxxK info, wattage is parse (9W for dual white is found only by looking at the 6W small version?).

Also not seeing 1/10 of the price, though it is considerably less nonetheless.

Not sure how long they've been around but at the 4th version of their bridge already?

Also very limited options.

None the less, something to keep an eye on for sure.

  • 2 weeks later...

Limiteless/Mi-Light stuff is FAR away from Hue speaking of features but for most people, it can fulfill a basic need of adding color and remote control to existing fixture.

We have just completed writing a driver for the Limiteless/Mi-Light systems, it enable all the control options you have on the RF Remote or the iPhone app but integrated in Control4. Let me say now I understand why those bulbs are so cheap... They allow only BASIC light control with no feeback, ramping control or independant R-G-B control.

Each Wi-Fi bridge can control only 4 groups of bulbs, so you may need to buy multiple bridges to control a whole house. You have to pair your bulb with to the Wi-Fi bridge using the iPhone App before integrating in Control4. You will also have to find the ip address of the bridge using some way (I recommend looking into the DHCP table of your router). There is no discovery app right now,

Basically our driver present a Brightness dimmer and a ColorChanger dimmer that allow (like the name says) to change the color of the bulb. You can also direct set the color through presets available in programming. As explained before, the Limiteless/Mi-light system it not two-way no it's not possible to query the state or color of the bulb, also ramping is not available because the hardware does not support it and software ramping never look good.

Standard button binding is available and work well. You can easily bind a Mi-Light bulb brightness or color control to a Control4 keypad or Switch.

Disco Mode (automatic color change) is also available through programming, there is no way to directly specify the Disco Mode you want, you have to cycle over all avaible modes, best for that is to bind this function to a Keypad, so the customer will be able to change the color change mode by taping a button. Disco Mode speed control is really bad, you have to specify Faster or Slower repetively to get to the color change speed you want, no direct set, still something you will want to do with a keypad.

Also, no scene support, the bulbs really does not work well with sequential commands and the lack of Ramping control simply make scene support impossible.

I may try to add software Ramping control and a discover option for the Wi-Fi bridge in the next release.

So that's it! The driver is simple, but do ALL what it can be done with that system.

badJesus, good news for you, the driver will cost less than $100, this is not a driver complex enough to worth $100.

I still need to do some final testing but the driver will be officialy released within a day of two, you can contact me if you're interrested to purchase.

We are officially release our driver for the Mi-Light / LimitlessLED Smart Bulb system. It require the Wi-Fi bridge version 4.0, it may not work with previous hub version since they use a different port.

This version only support controlling RGBW bulb and RGBW LED strip controller. Support for older RGB or White bulb can be added on request.

Usage is pretty straightforward: there is two dimmers, one for brightness, one for color. The Limitless system does not support dimming individual R-G-B color, it use only 256 preset colors.

LimitlessLED system is in fact..... very limited so the Control4 integration cannot be 100% reliable. It use one-way UDP command that sometime get lost before reaching the Wi-Fi hub, it does not report its state, does not provide any feedback and cannot handle burst of commands... So that mean a driver with very basic functionality and no warranty it'll work everytime. Also there is no ramping command in those bulb so we implemented a software-based ramping that will never work as well as a true hardware ramping, use this feature at your own risk.

This is why we are releasing this driver with free 24h trial built-in. To enable the trial, just enter "trial24" as license key and you're good to go for a whole day. Need more time for testing? Just remove and re-add the driver and you're back with another 24h trial. Use that as many time as you want. If you like the driver, please buy it, we kept the price very low to match the average price of other LimitlessLED stuff. For pricing information, please contact info@domaudeo.com

They would do better if they made the bulb look better. Its ugly and looks like Chinese crap. Even though you would never see that metal base, most people judge based off of looks. The Philips Hue looks nice at first look.

Another thing, the look just reminds me of those cheap Chinese LEDs that crapped out right away that people bought back when LED's where like $60 a pop.

But, I really do hope this works well with C4 and the bulb itself is good.

....I agree, their website is bad.

... but IT IS crappy China stuff :) The point is: it's cheap and you know, people love cheap stuff... Philips Hue is WAY better but with a price...

As for the driver, it work "well" as long as the bulb work "well"... As stated, it's cheap China stuff, we are far from commercial-grade reliability here.
