Speed is life

Since I've never had a responsive local dealer to demo things, or how things might be made better... maybe I'm missing something with the mobile app? It is way too slow to start up. Is there a way to make it faster?

My iOS app takes nearly 10 seconds to start up if I kill it and restart it. Once it is loaded, it is very responsive. If it is running in the background, and has to re-connect to the system, it only takes a couple of seconds. June 4, 2020 release. 320.23.0.371 -- I'll call it up tonight and see if it still re-connects that fast. If it does, this is a major improvement.

Takes less than 2 seconds if the app is running in the background. If I've been using it, it is almost instant on. If it has been a while, takes a second or two. Much better than it was.

If I kill the app, or refresh the navigators, it takes about 10 seconds. I can live with that.

Speed of the ios app has been mentioned several times in different areas of the forum and I have commented a couple of times. I want to mention the subject again since I've not seen recent conversation.

Before the BIG update, if the app was running in the background it would become "live" almost immediately. A fraction of a second. I could send the commands I needed to using my iphone, then simply put phone to sleep so the screen wasn't on. Then I would simply turn it back on...the app would be LIVE immediately AND it would be at the same screen I left it. If I used another app on the phone but left the c4 running, I could go back to c4 and it again would be LIVE and at the same screen that i last used. Was VERY convenient.

While the performance of the app has improved some it is no where near what I described above. If i use a different app the c4 app is likely to disconnect. When I go back to it it must again fetch the system info. Then I must select the bar that appears at the bottom to actually open the screen for the current activity or device in use. Before,  I could use another app or turn the phone off, and when I went back to the c4 app, it would connect immediately AND be on the same screen of the device in use. I could use it instantly.

I know 2-3 seconds and then the need to press a button to get to the screen your were on doesn't sound like much but when there is a need to pause, stop or perform another function it becomes quite inconvenient. I use several other apps that stay connected or connect immediately. I know that all apps are different and need to perform different tasks but it worked before...I've gotta believe it can happen again!!

The problem I'm having is inconsistent response time. So much so that I just don't use it anymore. The only gotta have reason to use it (for us) is the garage door opener, and when we needed it to work, it didn't.

2-3 seconds... you are lucky!  My response time is well under 2 seconds on local WiFi.  But we are talking 2-3 minutes (Or more) to get the app up and running when one is not local.  Apparently a known issue in South Africa but a year ago, it was (allegedly) on the cards for a fix (server upgrades) in Q1 of 2020.  Now I have given up and use the various native apps for most things when I am not at home.  Very disappointing as I have 2 residences so am always “not at home” in terms of at least one of them.

That's a shame, Elvis. My initial respond=s time to fetch all system info can vary from 3 to sometimes 5 seconds. Again, it doesn't seem like much time but it really is when you are operating AV equipment and need to make adjustments or changes.

I love the app, especially the convenience of having it on my phone. I use it all the time when i use either my audio equipment listening to music  or video equipment watching a movie or football game in my home theater. I like using it better than the wand. Plus I only need one device at my listening/watching seat. Of course, I must have my phone so it works out great. Just wish it worked as it did before.

Yikes! I do remember seeing you post often in other threads a while back. I thought those issues for you in Africa had been addressed. At least that was the impression i got. But then again I guess I didn't pay close attention as it wasn't an issue I had to deal with. And have multiple homes creates an obvious need for fast consistent response and connection.

Control4's delay is a lot more apparent because they don't show you anything until the connection is complete (sessions, etc.) before displaying the app's user interface. Lutron and others immediately open the app and then update the contents. So it looks even faster than it already is. For example, I killed the Lutron app, turned off WiFi on my phone, changed some lights, and re-launched the app. The app started right away, but it took it 2-3 seconds to show the status of the lights and shades.

Still, it only took 2-3 seconds off the network. Control4 took 8-10 seconds, and then another 2-3 seconds to accurately display the status of my garage door.

This seems to have gotten better recently.  I find that it takes about 2-3 seconds for the C4 app to start up and retrieve info.  I am on C4 OS 3.1.3 and iOS 14.0.1.  This is while I am at home on my LAN.

On the lan, I am well under 2 seconds... with a big project... and it is phenomenal.  I don’t think I could ask for better!

Off site - disaster.

Did u tried a VPN connection to your controller then use C4 app, way faster and u wouldn’t need 4Sight!

Great idea from a speed perspective although I’ve no idea how to do this... will definitely speak to my dealer.

I use 4sight for all sorts of things so won’t be dumping it but would love to get app speed right!

When u do that the app “think” it’s local and it loads faster, I can tell u that 4Sight depends on VPN ports that are monitored in SA and blocked in Egypt so it doesn’t even work! I have no option but to use VPN.

I finally got a VPN working for my home network.  Need to do the same on my holiday house network.

App now loads in 2 seconds remotely if I am on another WiFi network.  It is an unbelievable experience 😀.  I can’t get it to work when on my cellular suppliers 4G network.  Not quite sure why as I get the VPN to open and I can access IP addresses but the Control4 app fails to load with a 408 error.  Weird that it works remotely from, say, my work WiFi but doesn’t work on a cellular network.  Have not tried other cellular providers yet...
