Steve Hammond
Hi there, basic question but I can’t find the information anywhere. How the C4 remotes talk with the system? Is it over wifi? Bluetooth?? I figured out iris not IR as compared to Logitech’s harmony. Thank you

HomeAutomationNerd
The NEEO is WiFi. I believe the others are all Zigbee. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
eggzlot
and just an fyi, Control4 uses its own, more secure, Zigbee Pro stack. Therefore not every Zigbee device you see will work automatically within C4.
Steve Hammond
Ok, thank you all. I am about to do some changes to my Wifi networks, and wanted to make sure the remotes won’t stop working if I change anything. I suppose that the ZigBee protocol is between the remote and the box on the back of the TV, as I can’t believe the remote in the baseman can talk over to the second floor controller directly. That makes lot of sense in a way. Thank you
msgreenf
Please be careful w wifi changes as changing ip range can impact your equipment.

That is not where I’m heading. Just changing the Luxul AP to a different SSID/password. The subnet and everything else will stay the same. RAV
Remotes operate on Zigbee protocols, special security sauce added for Control4 products, it's a mesh network. Non battery devices relay the signal between themselves to reach the processor and send commands. So lighting devices can relay the remote's signal to a basement processor. Control4s official position on how to setup a Zigbee mesh has evolved over the years, used to be one mesh and add helper processors as needed to relay commands, now multiple mesh recommended each with their own processor, trying to eliminate the number of hops a signal has to go through. It can be affected by WiFi, so take care if changing 2.4 channels.

zaphod
By the way, more recent Harmony's use a Hub and the remote uses RF to communicate from remote to Hub and then the hub has IR blasters and Bluetooth. The Hub connects to your Wifi network. So both C4 and these Harmony remotes don't need line of sight so you don't have to point them at your devices. The C4 method is more robust in most ways although it can't control bluetooth devices, which Harmony can control. The other nice thing with C4 is that you can have many ways of controlling your AV - remote control, phone/tablet app, PC app (depnding on OS), touchscreen, keypad. Steve Hammond
I know that the more recent Harmony remotes have a better way of handling things, but I was still using the older models. That said I love the way C4 remotes work. No need to show it to the device to get it to work. RyanE
