I might have misunderstood about the cost of DMX and the intended use.  Actually, I do have a DMX-controlled LED strip on the stairs. In the media closet there is an ENTTEC ODE MK3 gateway, which is connected to another box, guessing the decoder? I was not very happy with how it was setup though, especially for the cost. In the Control4 App, it shows up under lighting  as 4 independent lights ( LED R, G, B, W), that can be individually controlled, no color wheel, no option for any light effect. Was pretty expensive too

Apologies for my newbie questions, I was under the impression that if I want to go the DMX way, I should buy specialized DMX LED strips, but from the comments here it seems that is not the case, or do most LED strips conform to DMX standard anyway? For running wires from the outside, I need to drill through the outside wall to reach the decoder, which worries me a bit.

I just bought a Govee led strip to test it out (not connected to Control4 yet), it works fine, but it uses Wifi (not keen have to enter my wifi password, no clue where that is going). Aside from that, are there any preferences to use Zigbee instead? I already have a bunch of light switches, dimmers, and keypads that use zigbee?

I will definitely try out Wix too

For the outdoor lights, nothing fancy, just a bunch of LED strips and some other accent lights, pot lights and such. As long as I can change the color depending,  have some scenes for Christmas, Halloween, etc, I'm happy, some light effects would be nice, not sure if the neighbours would appreciate :) I'm ok to pay extra for decent quality but preferably nothing outrageous.

@Cyknight Why not trust Govee for the outside?

Does Anyone have experience with Control4 Vibrant?

The gateway is probably connected to the decoder.  Lights connect directly to the decoder.  I think you may be using an older driver -- any modern DMX driver will have a better UI and allow you to have color and temperature sliders (vs having to control each individual channel separately like you describe).  I'm not familiar with the Enntec solution though, but I wonder if you can just update the driver.  What OS version are you on?  Enhanced support for color/temperature came in 3.3.0, but you need to update your drivers to take advantage of this functionality (if your drivers have new versions).

No - there are no speciality DMX strips -- you can use any LED strips with DMX decoders. You just need one decoder channel for each channel (R, G, B , etc).

  2. Hue, etc are nice -- but they are very expensive in quantity.

I'm in the DMX camp myself.  You can buy cheap strips on Amazon, etc, pickup decoders, etc.  There is an initial learning curve to DMX, but once you get the hang of it -- it's pretty straightforward.  But, you need to be able to run wires back to a central location (decoders) in most situations.  Like Cy said, wireless decoders are expensive.  I use Domaudeo's Advanced DMX driver (and the "red" box) -- but I think there are a few other solutions now.

I use Hue behind my TV's and DMX everywhere else (for LED strips).

It's main functionality is to implement longer auto locking, and only auto lock the deadbolt when the door is closed.  You turn off the deadbolt's auto lock functionality, and use this driver instead.

Ah yes, I love it when the deadlock engages while the door is open and then the kids slam the deadbolt into the door frame.

I agree with @gregheard regarding the AVPro 24x24 matrix.  It's really hard to overlook the support and warranty.  Plus, it does a little more natively with being able to feed it audio back from a display for instance (up to 130m via a balun or out to a zone via a balun).  That's not a knock on Triad, as I use it in my office and it's been great.  But I have 3 AVPro 24x24 in the wild with zero issues so far.  The driver is bulletproof as well.  I think most AVPro products play very nice with C4 and to be honest, I think you'll save money with AVPro versus 2 Triad Matrix's.

I'm a bit surprised that the 24x24 matrix only has two digital inputs. I think I use 4-6 digital inputs on my Triad.

I'm not sure how you're doing this. I'd be interested to see a screenshot of the programming you've set.

B&O does allow for a join order by product in the deep config GUI on each product. But it's very rare that there are two things playing in the house let alone more than that. So wherever I'm joining from it's almost a certainty that I want to grab the only thing playing elsewhere in the house.

Here is an example -- it's not quite like I remembered, but I think it achieves the same or similar goals:

    image.thumb.png.3c7c936bf0bbc2b9d5c6e73bb07b5c92.png

If my master bath has an active session, a double-tap to the "Music" button in my master bedroom will join that session.

If there isn't anything playing in the master bath, a double-tap will then try to join the session in the Living Room (closer in proximity to my master bath).

Lastly -- if there isn't anything playing in the living room either, it will try to join the kitchen's session.

Again -- this programming is obviously specific to how I want things setup and ordered, and it requires quite a bit of programming on each keypad -- but it works great for us.

I was just wondering about the option of a join command. I set up Pico four button remotes for my wife to start a "media scene" in the kitchen and hallway, for example, but would like her to be able to add the bedroom and bathroom to the same session when she goes to the back of the house. I haven't dived into HE yet, but I was hoping there was a way to trigger a command to join an already existing "media scene," but it sounds like nothing like that exists. Too bad.

Use the room control driver -- simple.

On button press, if a session is active in room X, join that session.

So I'm curious if you're using this the way I'm describing. Are you using the "Sync source between rooms" feature?

Basically every option I've seen, including this one, requires that you specify the rooms. There's no true "join" command available. Where I could start the music in the kitchen, or patio, or garage, or office, and still just tap a button that finds an ongoing session and joins it. Sonos does this with a long-press on the Play/Pause button, but they haven't made that command available in their driver.

I believe so -- I'll check when I get home.

This is true -- but I actually prefer the functionality that I have.  It allows me to define precisely how I want to group/join sessions.  For example, if I have a session on in my Kitchen area, I might not want to hear the same thing in my master+master bath, but I would want to hear the same thing in my master bedroom+master bath.

Programming allows me to do the following:  "If I double tap (join) the 'Music' button in the master bathroom, and there is an active session in the neighboring master bedroom, join it.  If not, check to see if there is an active session elsewhere in the home (eg, the kitchen) and join it instead."  It allows me to specify an order so to speak.

Of course you may be able to do this in B&O as well - not sure.

Personally I have Bang & Olufsen Multiroom and my favorite feature when using it via Control4 is putting the "join" command on a keypad in every room. I can walk it, tap Join, and expand the music to this room. I tap again and it drops it. I usually start with an AirPlay 2 stream to one room and then join within the B&O ecosystem.

I do the same thing with C4 native audio using the Room Control driver's "join" functionality.  Super handy - and we use it all of the time.

An example:  we are listening to music in our master bedroom, but want to go take a shower in the bathroom.  Double tap the "Music" button on the Bathroom's keypad, and it will automatically join the master bedroom session if it's on.

  9. Using a Triad AMS matrix and native C4 audio (outputs from a C4 controller into the matrix), dump amps.  This provides the most intuitive interface since you don't need to use any other apps other than the C4 app (unless of course you are using Spotify -- but it's not terrible).

Is there any audio quality or convenience advantage from having a bluesound node x connected to my newest control4 matrix? Or does the control4 do everything the bluesound node x does?

I do think that the Bluesound has better sound quality (via my Triad matrix) compared to native C4 audio via an EA5v2 -- but it's not as convenient for me, since my main source is typically Spotify and you cannot have a Spotify endpoint for each room when you use Bluesound (unless you have multiple nodes).  It's pretty solid for other music services though.

I do have Plex, but I was unable to link it to my NAS.
I think my only option here is to link it from my home PC or laptop - which means leaving it on 24/7 - which I just don't do.

So the one time per year I go to use Plex, I have to walk to the office to turn the PC on..... not ideal....

Do you have a Plex server running on your NAS?  That is what you typically want to do.

I think we may have discussed this but o do believe you can expose the Bluesound Spotify driver everywhere, but since you only have the one node, you just cannot steam 2 simultaneous instances. This is true for any streamer. The native (Ryff) and Autonomics (Mirage MMS) steamers have multiple streams (ie Core5, Core3, Core1, MMS-5e, MMS-3e, MMS-1e) …where the numeric portion of the product name is the simultaneous streams. Bluesound sounds fantastic, but look at Mirage MMS-3e and get 3 simultaneous streams. (Or 5 with the 5e) if you want a more robust Spotify integration. I don’t have one in hand right now (2 on demo), but when I get one back I’ll send you one to try.

Yep - makes sense!  I can expose the Bluesound Spotify driver in every room like you said.  The real issue is that I can't make the stream start or launch in any room that I want.  It starts in the room where the Node lives and then I had to use the C4 interface to join/add it to other rooms.  Not terrible, but not as nice as using the C4 native audio.

Here's a list of all the minidrivers, so yes on spotify.

Just got the Node wired in.  It clearly sounds better than C4 native audio (at least for Spotify).

My problem is that it's less-usable by the fact that I can't have a separate Spotify Connect endpoint in each room -- at least that I can tell.  If I have a single Node, I have a single instance to target from the Spotify app -- no matter how many instances of the mini-driver I have.  Am I doing something incorrectly?

C4 native is nice, because I have a separate Spotify driver in each room, which appears as a separate instance that can be targeted from the Spotify app.

  14. I'm adding a new Bluesound Node to my project.  Should I connect it to a digital input on my EA5 or my AMS24 (like my other sources)?

I don't understand why you would use a controller input vs a matrix input.  I've seen folks say they use either/or.  Why would I choose one over the other?

  15. 12 hours ago, ekohn00 said:

Yes, I think it’s a better experience. bluesound has c4 mini drivers to control the streaming services.
I got the Bluesound originally for roon integration, but became pleasantly surprised overall.

I ended up ordering the new Node to play with.  It's not in yet.. but, I would like to retain functionality that allows me to easily target any room for Spotify via the Node.

I currently have a Spotify driver/endpoint defined for each room, and I can quickly just use the Spotify app to start a session in any room in my home.  To add additional rooms, I can just use the C4 app.  Is something like this possible?

Sony OLED will beat the crap out of the frame. Remember the frame is made to be something other than a TV.

It's still a VERY good TV, but it's not in that league.

That said I really like the matted screen on frames for many rooms over a glossy one.

I have a 2021 (glossy) model frame, and I wouldn't say it's *very* good.  It has ridiculous clouding and bleeding issues -- and I have had the panel replaced twice.  In the end, Samsung told me they were just going to refund me.  I decided to keep it because it's in my master bedroom -- but I certainly wouldn't put up with it in a "main" viewing area.

If OP wants picture quality, most definitely stick with the Sony OLED.

Personally think the limiting factor is the DAC in the core or EA. Having high-resolution audio going through a cheaper DAC degrades the sound. I personally added bluesound for most of the streaming music as well as the whole home audio, there's a significant difference.

PS....even Sirius and Pandora are better sounding, and they are far from high-res

I really want to pick up a Bluesound to check the sound quality difference for myself.  But, I also don't want to lose the ease of use that using built-in streaming services on C4 has.  Can you have a similar experience with Bluesound?

You should not get the popcorn effect using Lutron scenes. Something is not configured correctly if you are. Did you create phantom buttons in the repeater that are controlling the scenes?

Can the RA2 Select driver do phantom buttons?  I can't remember.  I think my popcorn effect is mainly due to the different types of fixtures that are combined on a single load -- they are under cabinet fixed LED's and some are daisy chained, etc.

  19. 7 hours ago, Carter Hobson said:

Do you trigger pre-made scenes in the Lutron side of things or create your scenes in Control4? I have heard you can do it both ways but just seeing what other people have done in this case.

I create scenes in ALS (C4 advanced lighting scenes) -- because many of my scenes typically combine Lutron+Hue+DMX.  In my experience, I still get the "popcorn" effect when triggering Lutron scenes from C4 -- so it didn't make much of a difference for me.

I am designing a project using the new Lutron Caseta Diva and Claro switches for most lighting loads. Would it work to have a couple of Control4 Keypads (AC Powered) to trigger scenes controlling the Lutron loads? I don't want to have to spend a lot of money to have all the switches be C4, but I do still want a couple of keypads throughout the house.

    Thanks for the help!

Yes.  This is pretty common.  I do this in my house.

Neeo is auto updated. It's not about the neeo. It's your network. Neeo is only as good as your network. C4 and automation are only as good as your network. You have network issues.  It's clear from our exchanges.

To be fair, the Neeo hardware does have known issues (regarding its WiFI chipset).  This was a problem prior to Control4 purchasing and releasing their own version of the Neeo.

It's always been fairly reliable for me (I run Unifi switching and WAP) -- although it does have it's moments occasionally.
