Cyknight
Hmm what they said is that they are opening up integration/API including Siri integration to 3rd parties such as Control4 (people remain so surprised that the biggest smart-home/home automation company is mentioned by others...). Very little - non really- detail on what that actually will entail but it at least shows Apple is becoming more willing to cooperate vs isolating itself. Which is good news! You think Control4 is bigger than Crestron (they were mentioned as well)? I think its a pretty big deal for Control4 to be mentioned during an Apple keynote. johnpg
I think it's a huge deal for integrators to be mentioned at all, it's not a market Apple would typically get involved in and especially not devote precious keynote time to. However part of the reasoning may be due to the lack of much to say about tvOS. There wasn't a lot new announced. I wonder if this is an isolated thing, or if it signals more Control4 integration opportunities in the works. Apple Music being the obvious low hanging fruit. Well the sentence should have been companies, but depending on how you define 'biggest' - yes Control4 is arguably bigger. And while you can think it's a big deal, so far it's just an announcement that there will be a better integrated OS for appleTV later this year. Like I said, good news, but I'm not one to jump onto a hype - especially with little to no background information.

RyanE
9 minutes ago, therockhr said: You think Control4 is bigger than Crestron (they were mentioned as well)? In Residential, probably so. Crestron doesn't target residential, and doesn't even go to CEDIA anymore. Residential + Commercial + Boardrooms, probably not so much. Hard to say with precision, as Crestron is not a public company, and don't expose their sales figures. RyanE

therockhr
If you are affiliated with Control4 this would have to be a pretty huge announcement. Even if this ends up being nothing more than allowing official IP control of Apple TV and maybe allowing Siri the ability to control thermostat, lights, etc, it still means a lot to be mentioned during an Apple keynote. Control4 just got exposed to lots of people who otherwise had no idea about the company or product.

johnpg
I wasn't expecting this. https://www.crestron.com/en-US/News/Press-Releases/2018/Crestron-Integration-with Apple-TV,-Siri,-and-Home?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign= If what Crestron is saying is true, then I'm sure it's the same for Control4. In the keynote Apple specifically said it was to control Apple TV, including the Siri feature. It was about control of the Apple TV, with no mention of HomeKit or anything else. But the Crestron announcement says otherwise. Can anyone from Control4 clarify what is actually being made available? John

Again, the biggest company in the world mentions Control4 at an event that the whole tech industry and media is focused on and your response is “keynotes are overhyped”. Lol. Great ambassador. Cy you have been a great asset to this community given your inside connection to Control4 and knowledge of control systems. However you can be quite intolerable when it comes to adding dissonance to numerous conversations by intentionally acting like you have direct inside knowledge that contradicts what others post. Unless you know directly what C4 has planned from Apples keynote announcement why contradict the OP?

RyanE
Control4 does not typically pre-announce release dates or feature sets. Especially now. I'll officially announce that our name was up on the big board for WWDC, which is cool. RyanE
jfh
Let's hope whatever integration this results in for C4 works better than that for the Apple Watch.
Drake0508
C4 should come out with a touchscreen remote option like Savant and Crestron. Siri integration will become useful in this way. The voice feature on the Savant pro remote worked very well and was almost the reason my wife made me stay with Savant. I think voice in this way will make Apple useful, along with full IP control of the Apple TV.
Gary Leeds UK
To be honest they need this to work for remotes etc. Our Satellite Company (Sky) have a remote which is voice controlled. However it looks more like Interview to see who they wish to Buy ?
zaphod
Let's have more discussion on what this really means. Does this mean just more direct control of ATV? Or does it go much further to have complete integration of Control4 and HomeKit, similar to what is possible today with HomeBridge. I am hoping and guessing it is the latter - especially given Ryan's response.
control4user007
Dont know if these guys have some inside knowledge or not... https://referencehometheater.com/press-release/apple-announces-plans-to-develop-new-integration-capabilities-for-control4/ What exactly was announced? Apple announced that they are enabling better integrations with Apple TV and 3rd party control systems, like Control4. The announcement today is simply that, an announcement, not a release. The Apple TV software that supports these new capabilities won’t be available until later this year. What is Control4 intending to achieve with this new integration? Working with Apple, we intend to support Siri voice control and new IP control integrations for Apple TV. We are early in the development process, as such we won’t be sharing the specific features and functionality until we’re ready for public release. When will Siri voice control and the new Apple TV integration be released? This new functionality will become available sometime after Apple publicly releases their new software. Consistent with our other development projects, we are not announcing a specific date at this time. Does this mean Control4 is HomeKit compatible? No. This announcement is enabling better integration with Apple TV and support for Siri voice control.
