FAQ

Why is this product so exciting?

ratgdo is a WiFi control board for your garage door opener that works over your local network. It connects to your door opener with three simple wires.

It works with virtually any residential Chamberlain or Liftmaster manufactured garage door opener and also offers basic support for other brands which use dry contacts to control the door.

It can control the door and report back the actual status of the door (closed, opening, open, closing). For Security + 2.0 door openers, the obstruction sensors, light, wireless lockout and even motion sensing are also integrated.

What garage doors will this work on?

Any residential door opener made in the last 25+ years by Chamberlain/Liftmaster should work. If your opener is mounted over head and has a yellow learn button, it is supported by ratgdo hardware v2.0 or greater. If your opener is a wall mounted jackshaft opener or has a red, purple or orange learn button, it is supported by ratgdo hardware v2.5 or greater.

Door openers manufactured by the Chamberlain Group have a learn button on them. The color of the learn button can (mostly) tell you which control protocol the opener uses.

  • Residential overhead mounted openers
    • with a yellow learn button are Security + 2.0
    • with a red, purple or orange learn button are Security + “1.0”
  • Residential wall mounted jackshaft openers
    • With model 8500W or RJ070 are Security + 2.0
    • All others are Security + 1.0
  • Security + 2.0 door openers require ratgdo v2.0 control board or later
  • Security + 1.0 & Dry Contact door openers require v2.5 control board or later

Many non Chamberlain openers can be controlled with dry contacts, but also require the connection of limit switches to ratgdo in order for it to interpret the door positions (Closed, Opening, Open, Closing)

A matrix of known / tested compatible garage doors can be found via link below.

ratgdo wiki

How does the motion sensors and obstruction sensors work?

  • Motion detection requires a wall control panel with a built in motion detector such as the 889LM.
  • Obstruction Status requires Obstruction Detection Beams be installed. This can be purchased from the garage door manufacturer.
  • The ratgdo driver will automatically install the motion sensor portion and obstruction portions. If these are not available on your product configuration then please delete the motion sensor driver or irbeam driver from your project.

What is the remote control lock?

This feature allows you to disable the RF remote control from controlling the garage door. This is useful if the car is parked outdoors or if it is loaned out to someone whom the homeowner does not want to give access to the garage to.

Help i cannot use my garage door RF remote anymore.

You have locked the remote control. Unlock it via the driver or via the ratgdo web server.

How do i install ratgdo hardware?

Please see link below instructions. Take note that you need to pre-install the ESPHome firmware as per instructions below.

How does the Control4 driver talk to ratgdo?

The driver will communicate to ratgdo via IP. Please ensure that the ratgdo is put on a static or reserved ip address.

Where can i purchase ratgdo?

This driver is designed to work with ratgdo with the ESPHome firmware installed. You can order the hardware from the following website

Driver has been updated with automatic email and push notifications (note 4sight is required).

Supports email and push notifications for

  • Garage Door Close
  • Garage Door Open
  • Garage Door Left Open (with a definable time period)

Awesome.  I'm going to try this.

I saw in a YouTube video (targeted at Home Assistant users) that the Ratgdo seems to track percentage open and you can open to any percentage of open.  Does your driver support this?  My use case is that I have a "whole house" exhaust fan in one of my garages and I would like to programatically crack the garage door open a bit and run exhaust fans during summer in certain situations.

We do track the percentage however we only utilise that for feedback so that you do not need to install a reed swirch. The driver does not support setting the door to a specific position.

I managed to figure out how to do the percentage open functionality.  Have implemented it as a one way command in the driver's commands.  This is so that i don't break the existing native Control4 garage door opener user experience that we have tied into.

Have also implemented discrete open and close functionality as well for supported models.

Please test this out in ESPHome first to ensure you have discrete open and close before implementing in Control4.

@alanchow Does the light proxy work with Liftmaster's 823LM Remote Light Switch? This syncs with the garage opener, when the garage door opens, the light turns on. Also works with the wall control motion sensor and light button.

Good question.  I don't have an answer to this.  We implemented the light on ratgdo's ESPHome firmware.  You should reach out to Paul from ratgdo to see how the light works for remote light switches.

Personally though i would just use any Control4 integrated light switch and get the ratgdo driver to turn the light on and off.  Feedback is instant so it'll work nicely.

@alanchow

I have a question sir.  When running multiple doors, is there a way to have an icon that's a "master" that reflects the state and controls all the doors?

Basically, if I have 3 doors, and 3 drivers, is there a way to have a "Garage Door All" Icon that when pressed opens or closes all the doors, something like that.  I could do a custom button, but I'd really like a Garage Door driver type scenario where you can press it and all the doors track.  I'm hitting a wall as I don't have enough bindings to really get this functionality.  Thanks sir!

Unfortunately you can't have a single driver that tracks and controls multiple doors

Thank you. You get where I’m going with this right sir? There are door lock consolidator drivers, would be cool for multiple bay garage doors!

...or a virtual Sensor driver.

Attach virtual Sensor to a standard garage door driver to provide status.
Run a macro when any door opens, if all closed set virtual sensor to closed, if any open set to open
If Garage All is open when tapped, run macro close doors (if door 1 open close, if door 2 open close etc)

Can be done using an actual relay and contact input. Use the relay to set the 'sensor' through programming. Would be preferable not to loose 2 IO.

I'm not sure it will let me bind to multiple sensors that way.  The RATGDO has fully closed/open sensor bindings, I don't think I can double them up like that.
