g8rfn2 got a reaction from jimbones in Clear Sonos Queue!
Just a quick note here to praise @DanITman!
He has a driver that finally addresses the issue of not being able to clear a Sonos Queue in programming. Hit him up for more info, but it works flawlessly! Still amazed that it takes a custom driver to do such a basic function, but 3-4+ years of moaning is finally fixed. It's VERY useful for setting up custom buttons for playing specific playlists on a Sonos Connect to a particular room without the prior playlist being mixed into it! Many, many more uses... but, that's just 1 example.

Anyways... Thanks Dan! I had honestly given up. 🙂 🍻

Sure, there are basic elements that work fine. However, not being able to view, modify, or clear the queue while a playlist or station is playing is a big deal for most. I use the queue all the time at parties or even just by myself to move songs around a bit and make edits on the fly. The solution, of course, is to just control the music from the Sonos app once you set the rooms to "listen" on the C4. But, then what's the point of this entire system if you're just using it to set inputs?
As a more practical example as it relates to customization: In my situation, i tried to program some custom buttons for my wife and I that would set lighting configurations and turn on specific playlists in the master bath in the morning. Basically make a nice 1-button / 1-voice-command scene for each of us as we get ready for the day. Simple enough request and something C4 seems perfect for, right? Except, I quickly realized when u change playlists on the same device (even hours or days later), the default behavior is to BLEND the new playlist into the existing one that was playing previously.  Why? Because there is no ability to clear the queue FIRST before sending the new commands. In our house... we have 3 Sonos Connect's integrated into the system with a mix of wired room speakers and individual Sonos devices. We share those 3 connects with a family of 5, so u can imagine the music i sometimes heard in the middle of my playlist from my 16 year old's playlist he was playing the night previously. 😲
Anyway, I think what is most frustrating is it's a very simple fix for Sonos (and then C4 to tie into). But, here we sit nearly 2 years later. It shows very clearly that neither side gives a damn.
To me, having music service control with no queue control is like having a car w no engine. What's the point?

C4 made Cinegration (driver developer) pull their MyQ Garage driver because it wasn't using an official API.  C4 reached out to MyQ to become partners.  MyQ tells C4 to pound sand.  See where I'm going with this??
C4 is a fully capable system, albeit with a few flaws that I don't like, but these flaws aren't show stoppers.  It's a 2-way street really.  If a company doesn't want to publish/share an API for control, then that's their business decision as flawed as that may be.

He didn't outgrow a router....it was sized wrong to begin with, even for the lower BW. I'd agree that the dealer should have left a bad taste...
I've posted many times.....I've yet to see anyone with Unifi and C4 problems that keeping the network simple (No VLANs or advanced features that really aren't needed).

Wow that's an incredibly anal and wrong statement on many levels. What makes you think your credentials are any better?

the router he got was rated at 492Mbps W2L and a measly 75Mbps for IPSec. He has a 300Mbps connection.
There's no specs on PPS, so actual throughput on the link based on traffic wouldn't be know, but for the most part the 492 is probably derived using large packets, which means under daily use the the router may not be able to move the number of packets he could generate - which basically means less than 492.....  Notice kids, games, small packets....  On top of that if the router has any features turned on (ie security, dhcp, nat, port forwarding, etc), you can almost guarantee the number of PPS keeps dropping.....
And basically he's working from home, so if he's running IPSEC on the box, he's obviously screwed.

OK, this is killing me....   you're so dead on right and anyone else who says change the WAP first should be shot....
ON the  first post he said:
    LAN - LAN Throughput: 1Gbps
    WAN - LAN Throughput: 492Mbps
So as you already noticed, if the internet is 1G, there's no way to go past 492MB....... No matter what.
And he gave the basic info of why this matters......multiple kids in the house.... gaming/streaming/etc.... yes no one person will hit 1G, but you add them up - and heck, my kids will find long cables to connect directly to the switch.   with out any doubt, he will see a major difference changing the router.

Having no issues doesn’t mean it cant be better.
Biiiig difference between that 100mb and a 1g connection.   I’m in a similar place as the original poster - I do a lot of file transfers/work online.  Going from 150mb to 1g was dirt cheap - and the results show with far-far less wait times.

You're basing real world examples on a few Netflix streams. (BTW ultra HD streaming is about 25Mbps not Gbps - which is an obvious typo above) Not really a "real world". The guy has a house of kids.....  he's going to have gaming and videos and a whole lot of traffic going on.
One of the things a better router provides and faster packet forwarding and lower latency (along with utilizing the BW he's paying for). Gamers love high bw, not because they're saturating a link, but because the packet delays after far less.......     You''d also see major differences in DL'ing apps, torrents, files, etc.   Media streams take less time to cache, and could tend to "pause" less.
Obviously with the size of his home, 2 access points isn't enough for full coverage. Enough said on the number of WAPs and coverage.
Rarely do I condone changing everything.....but in this case....Router needs to be able to service the connections. And WAP coverage is far from ideal......

I'll second mujtaba's answer for using Mikrotik for routing.  The best in the business hands down.  Your ISP's use these devices in all of their COLO's.
Switches you can most likely use.
Wifi, I'd change over to Ruckus Unleashed.  But if you want to stick with what you've got, you'll definitely need to add more for the full coverage you're looking for.

    Hi pal

For sure it seems like your router is the issue. I’m not a fan of akrapnis lol hence the name.

If it was one of my take over jokes I would change the router and the waps out and probably the switches too....

I would start of by changing your router, depending on how techy you are I would go for a mikrotik router. They take a bit of time getting them setup properly but once they are you hardly have to touch them again unless it’s for a software update or if you need to add something. By default they come with multicast disabled so this needs to be enabled for c4 to work at its best.

Look at the RB3011. Have a look at these results for wan to lan and lan to lan https://mikrotik.com/product/RB3011UiAS-RM#fndtn-testresults

You can pick them up for around $180.

And then if this still doesn’t solve your issue I would then look into changing your WiFi access points out.

The good think about mikrotik everything is managed from the router so you don’t need any additional hardware to manage you other devices etc.

    Thanks

I started to subscribe awhile ago - email I got when I woke up:
        Token Authentication service upgrade
An update has been posted   After the rollback of the authentication token, we had to update some records in the database. Customers will need to re-login to their mobile applications. If customers are still experiencing issues connecting with their projects after around noon MST on Wednesday, we recommend a reboot of their controller to force a renew of their authentication token. If need be, we can force a reboot of controllers remotely. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your patience as we've worked to resolve this as quickly as possible.   Time posted

    Okay I do too

403 is a http error somewhere something isn’t right from the client side (us) to the server side (Control4). It could be some sort of authentication, a certificate or someone got the http address wrong that the clients are supposed to point to...

I’m sure control4 will be able to shed some light on it when I call in the morning.

I’ll report back here with any updates

    Thanks

This is one of my pet peeves - why not have read only access to connections like IR, audio, video, etc in Composer HE?  Same thing with light switches/dimmers bound to keypads.  Why keep end users in the dark on this when some of this information can be crucial to programming your own system in Composer HE?  Same thing with IP addresses of devices - why not show what C4 is using for IP addresses to help you troubleshoot something like an IP address that got changed?  You can see the IP address and change this in some drivers - for example for a Hue bridge. In some drivers you can see but not change - like in the HTI Roku driver.  In other drivers and/or C4 connections you are totally in the dark.
At least with audio zones on Matrix amps you can see the zone name in the Monitoring tab on Composer HE - where it shows Output Settings - Output Zone 1 (Office) or whatever.

I would give each Roku a unique name in their settings (on the Roku settings).
Then reselect each respective Roku in the drop down list so the name shown in the line above the selector is the proper Roku.

Man, I just got caught up on this monster... Have to say, there are some great points (from both perspectives) if perhaps over-dramatized a bit. 🙂
But, I really think knowitall and blub made some points worth repeating.
The statement above is *mostly* the cold harsh truth, except for one glaring omission to choppedogg88's point later in the thread... They still own the best PRODUCT for merging everything together into one user friendly system. So, while the "business" is currently running away from them. The PRODUCT needs to be better marketed and flipped to at least some level of more mass-market adoption in order for any company in the space to succeed. I have had my system for about 3 years now... My friends and family are constantly blown away with the features it offers, simplicity, etc. But, in 3 whole years (and we have a LOT of company), not a single person we have ever had in our home has heard of Control4 or even knows what it is. That is a MASSIVE problem. I don't necessarily agree that IoT and DIY are exclusively the future, because i think the unique combo of hardware and software is what makes the system more stable than others. But, the efforts on marketing need to be quadrupled at a minimum.
We can argue all day long about whether the dealer model will continue to exist or not, but both sides are speculating. The truth is... there is (and will continue to be) a need for both. The dealers will always have a small market of people that either a. don't want to deal with any of the headaches and just want stuff to work 24/7 or b. Have more money than they know what to do with and just want the latest and greatest anything. Neither of those are going away. But, as a dealer, if you don't want the market to expand to the other 98% who are literally clamoring for better solutions across all their devices, I simply dont know what to tell ya? But, i do know... if you continue to wait and try to force the old model, eventually you will become Blockbuster and the big boys will squash you like a bug once their products catch up and pass you. I went through 3 different local companies before finding this forum (and thereby un-earthing the beauty of the remote dealer). I can't believe that is a coincidence? The service SUCKS out in the local markets. And, the profits and revenue show it. Simple as that. Of course, none of you guys on here emulate that... Because, clearly you care about the end product and the service to customers. That's why you're here is to further service the community. And, we truly do appreciate it.
So, what's the answer? How do I fix it if I am Snap?
Yes, lower prices on hardware, but sustain it with subscription tiers. Basic systems have basic hardware and free software. And, it goes up from there. Cut dealers in on the subscription tiers. Bonuses if x% of your customer base are level 3, for example. Same thing for consumer access. Different tiers have different levels of access.
But, the BIGGER idea (i think) is two-fold. 1. Embrace the model you guys have basically built on here! I guarantee that every dealer would rather work out of their home remotely if they could sustain enough business doing it? The only way that happens is to increase customer volume with better (more attractive) pricing. Those local companies i mentioned wouldn't even show up for less than 150 bucks. Then, each request was + + +. I was lucky to get out of just about anything without it being 300 or more. There should be an ARMY of remote dealers on Control4.com right now. But instead, it's an antiquated 1994 system of locating a local guy and leaving a voicemail, hoping he even calls you back. It's the complete opposite of what a "technology" company should be. If everyone is compensated to get MORE users instead of worrying about stealing ones from other dealers... everyone wins. 2. Focus less on the hardware side and MORE on this notion of being the "glue" that binds everyone together. Google is pissing on Amazon, who is pissing on Apple. Sonos is just off on their own little planet. Etc. etc. Consumers don't give a DAMN about the politics and revenue implications, they just want their stuff to work with other devices as well as humanly possible. C4 does that REALLY well, but back to my point earlier... nobody knows who the eff they are? Focus on being THE solution, and make it your #1 priority.
Bottom line, none of us know the answer as to what's planned. But, I can promise you NOBODY buys another company (especially a fledgling one) to just do "more of the same." Frankly, I'm shocked that notion has been repeatedly mentioned in this thread. You guys are much smarter than that! I spent the last 17 years in the video game industry... Imagine how hard it was to convince publishing executives to give away games on mobile devices for free. But, it was a very similar migration of thought. Sure, for every candy crush there are 600 failures, but C4 is a winner if they put the right pieces in place, and make the right chess moves.
Whatever it is... I hope Snap will move QUICKLY to clearly define and roll out a 1, 3, and 5 year plan. If they don't, sadly the bleeding will just continue.
Sorry for the long-winded rant. But, I'm passionate about the topic. 🙂
