Apple TV IP driver

Recommended Posts

Have Apple 4K TVs and used to get “control4 remote disconnected” followed by “control4 remote connected” infrequently. Now it is happening every 5 mins. During the disconnect the C4 (260) remote doesn’t work. Have a pinnacle dealer and I’ve rebooted the atv, ea5, remote. Problem persists. Zigbee mesh is robust with C4 lighting throughout house. Router is Luxul EPIC5 with Ubiquiti Wi-Fi.

Odd that nothing else has changed on kit before the issue became more frequent. Dealer says it happens to them too and only solution is IR. Anyone have IP solutions? Can’t imagine C4 certified IP driver is this buggy. I’m increasingly using the Apple ecosystem and if this is C4 issue that would be bad news. Thx.

Apple will always play in their own sandbox, and if you want to play with them you have to accept their rules, and their rules will change at will and without notice.

Jessie IR driver works the best, and without issues. More complete than the Control4 database IR driver.

Unless/until Apple allows some form of app launching via IP or meta feedback, there's no loss going to IR.
And when the next AppleTV releases, or your's bricks, you simply swap them out yourself without dealer intervention or worries.

Funny, I use the C4 IP driver and it works fine. Had problems last year, but been solid for over 6 months.

Same for me.  Native IP diver is solid for a total of 7 Apple TV’s across 4 residences.

I do see the disconnect / reconnect experience if I reboot the Director or refresh navigators...but that is it.

My dealer has installed intrinsic with another client of theirs’ and said tv keeps disconnecting and needs atv reboot. Is there a better one? Thanks.

Most likely they're using an old version of the driver. The current version is 210102, we have literally thousands in the field so if there was an issue we'd know about it quick enough! As other dealers have said, Apple have their own rules and do occasionally make changes but we'll always try and respond to this.

We fully support this driver so if anyone is having issues please drop us a support ticket https://www.intrinsicdev.com/support/ we can't help if we don't know about it :)

I have it deployed in many customers without issue...

I power cycled the ea5 (second try and waited 30 secs after pulling power) and now all much better. But we shouldn’t have to power cycle. C4 needs to do better esp given there is big move to streaming. I get that Apple is difficult but why not assign someone to follow changes and push new IP driver more frequently. IMO third party isn’t good option as these places can go out of business. Need C4 to do better job.

3rd party is the right thing to do, you wait for companies like Apple and they will do nothing, they have billions to collect, what is C4 business to them?

We use the Intrinsic driver, it’s reliable but early on we did get a lot of unresponsive Apple TV’s that required reboot but that seems to have been solved.  We avoid the official driver as the constant OS changes seem to break it.  A shame, I’ve resorted to recommending the new Roku Ultra with Dolby Vision support so we can use mini drivers as they are the best thing about Control4 integration with smart tv’s, etc.

NVidia Shield Pro is an excellent option (the best IMO).  C4 has native driver for it now as well (with the mini drivers).

Third party to me is absurd. C4’s value proposition is a single system to orchestrate a modern home. AppleTV driver isn’t reliable and Honeywell alarm driver always has issues (can’t work in concert w totalconnect and limits features) and doesn’t work well with our iAquaLink. So now I have an expensive system that doesn’t play well w several components (including the best selling professional alarm system and the best selling pool controls and the most popular steaming ecosystem). Some will say C4 works well w Honeywell Vista but fact is it keeps you from also using TotalConnect (which sends impotent notifications and allows for temp passcodes) and also doesn’t provide close to the number of features as does totalconnect. Again they need to spend more money and time on drivers — otherwise don’t claim it works with Honeywell and Aqualink and Apple hardware. Doesn’t even play well w hikvision — crazy resolution issues on OSD (“contact dealer” — they tell you no solution). So you need to buy LUMA cameras which are Hikvision rebranded at 3x the price to get three streams — and I had to wait months for them to fix the driver so the third stream worked correctly. Also 2 of my T3 screens are failing (4-5 years old — tried to replace w T4, received them, now RMAing all of them due to faulty screen issue on 8”) and two 260 remotes had screen dimming issue. Doesn’t play well w Honeywell Wi-Fi stats — no full programming — and we had to turn off MyQ. Makes me want to check out savant. And I’m working with a top-tier dealer!

The lack of being able to use the cbm and total connect has nothing to do with Control4. It's how Honeywell designed their hardware

Not sure what CBM means but Honeywell comfort and alarm are indicated to be supported by C4 and they don’t work. I got Vista due to the C4 compatibility list and the list is obviously incorrect. Not sure why compatibility is still indicated.

The CBM is the module that integrates the Vista panel into control4. If you use that module alone it integrates fine. But that module is not compatible with total connect. There's nothing control4 can do about that. That is how Honeywell has designed the system

So if I use that module (which we have but aren’t using)  I’ll have full control over the Vista system with passcodes and zone information and history and zone bypass etc? What about ConnectComfort?

Correct on the alarm. But then you have to remote total connect from your panel.

Sorry not familiar with connect comfort.

Yeah Apple is the problem regarding the Apple TV driver, not Control4.  Shame, the old driver was rock solid.

So does that mean that savant and crestron have same issues? What about HoneywellComfort (controlling Honeywell stats), iAquaLink issues, MyQ, hikvision? Ie what, besides lighting and music, can I do perfectly and completely w C4? Again I’m tech savvy, have in two homes, know HE, and have upgraded our dealer to pinnacle/diamond. If I want lighting and music I can deal with Sonos and Lutron as separate apps. C4 doesn’t seem to come close to being a home hub. And we’ve the latest C4 equipment and drivers!
