You're getting a few people mixed up here -- and its adding confusion to the conversation.
Original dealer wasn't on the job. New dealer called and was denied based on policy. Homeowner called and was rude to our tech support guys (yes we have the recording). We reached out to new dealer who ghosted or was busy or whatever to try and help fix. After not hearing anything back over the weekend we [Blackwire] proactively followed up with the original dealer and got everything squared away. Issues like this are extremely rare and we have the policy in place because the customers we service (dealers) overwhelmingly understand why its in place.
You guys can keep bitching and moaning about nonsense you can't do anything about unless you own 1) Control4 or 2) Blackwire but everything is all good now because thats how we work at Blackwire. We're all former dealers here and we don't leave anyone hanging  -- including people who call and are not nice on the phone -- because we have all been there.
tl;dr everything was fixed because we are not assholes like the OP suggests but that won't matter here because there's a dead horse to beat

We worked on fixing the other bug and ended up creating another I guess. We tested this for a full weeks without this issue coming up. Not sure what you are seeing here. Maybe a reboot is in order for you too.

In theory you shouldn't have to mess with your API key or reselect the system if everything was working before the driver updated. Emphasis added... If the driver was in a non-functioning state where the system wasn't selected it probably didn't update correctly. I'm still not sure why it was getting in that state before but there are a lot of factors. It seems a reboot of the controller fixes most issues if the update process doesn't work.
There is a UI bug I'm trying to track down in composer where the drop downs are not showing what was selected. You can click off the driver (on to another driver) and back and it will be set. Weird.

Are you writing drivers for yourself or to create solutions for other dealers? Is your goal to sell the drivers?

Learning Lua won't be an issue, it's an easy move from any language. Gaining the knowledge of the underlying protocols being used to talk between devices (Websockets, HTTP, etc) will be the more difficult part unless you are already familiar. It will also take a bit of time to get used to the Control4 environment from a Driverworks perspective.

Webviews seem to be the cool new thing so it likely won't just be Lua you'd be writing drivers in. It will be other common web languages and markups, HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.

My experience with Bluetooth -- every version of it, even the "good" version -- has been less than stellar. Its shit technology that is never implemented correctly by the vendor or manufacturer. Maybe next year they'll get it right. 🙄 Hard pass. Use something that works.

    Bluetooth -- It'll be awesome next year!®️
