Yep, because that's exactly how hundreds of millions of Android users encounter and live with those products. 😆  Whatever you can do with in the Android space that you can't do in the Apple space is irrelevant when the majority of the user base will only ever experience a fully finished, tested, and supported product.
The point we're all trying to get across to you is that there are distinct and (mostly) non-overlapping audiences for these types solutions. Neither one is ever likely to overtake the other. The most frustrated Control4 client in the world would still probably never embrace an open source version and vice versa. The permeability between the two types of experiences just isn't significant enough to allow much influence.
After this many pages of goofy arguments I'm not sure how many more ways this can be communicated.

    His quote was:
"Anyone making an obsolescence argument against Control4 in favor of Home Assistant or open source platforms in general sounds like a cult member. It's a perfectly viable hobby, but I don't come from my woodcarving retreat and ponder aloud, "what are furniture stores going to do when this catches on!?"
He specifically mentioned open platforms. And like you said, Control4 can run on Windows. Home assistant could probably run on a Control4 controller as well.
My point is valid. You know you dont always have to side with dealers when they make stupid comments?

Not really a valid point, there's no irony to the base OS being Linux, because Linux has nothing to do with Director, which is a completely custom and *not* open source, and Director runs the home automation project, and other non-open source daemons on the controller handle audio, I/O, etc.
Director could just as well run on Windows or on a different or real-time OS.  It's literally even compiled and shipped for Windows (virtual Director).

I don't have experience with ha, but based on user feedback actually, the difference between polling and immediate is a noticeable difference.
The original Shelly driver for instance used to have a 0-250ms delay in some cases. People noticed immediately when things were optimised so most of the time it became near 0ms
If you try a Shelly gen 1 device (poll based) and compare to a Shelly gen 2 (websockets), even if you're polling at 100ms, the difference is noticeable.
For automation purposes, it doesn't really matter, but for user experience, responsiveness is obvious

    No....
Can't install drivers, can't mess with bindings/connections. Also dealers in composer pro can limit certain programming and make it inaccessible in HE. Also, I don't recall if it allows property access either.
I'd assume that there is no terminal access on HE either.
    There are huge differences...

why do threads always go down this wormhole
DIY people are not those who would buy C4 and vice versa.  And that is ok.  It doesn't make one better than another.
Even if there was a DIY platform with identical speed, features, hardware, UI, etc to C4, there is still a market for C4 (and Savant, Crestron, etc).  There is a class of people who don't know anything about technology, they do not want to support it, they do not want to design it, they don't want to keep up with the latest, etc.  There are people who work 40+ hours a week and come home and don't want to tinker or update things, if there is a problem, they call someone to come fix it.  They have a family, they have other interests and updating firmware on a camera or figuring out how to run a balun to get audio back to a rack is not really what they want to be doing.
I've used this analogy before, I could cut my own lawn, but I hire someone to do it.  They would likely do it better than me, and on the weekends the last thing I want to do is spend a few hours working on my yard, so I outsource it.  I could go to store locally, pretty much get all the hardware and tools I need and I could go medium grade or professional grade on the tools, and own it, maintain them, service them and then use them in yard.  I'd also have to manage the weather because if it rains on the weekend I may have to find time at night after work in the dark to keep up with the lawn, it becomes a burden on me, my wife would keep asking why our lawn hasn't been cut in over a week, etc.   Don't get me started on post storm branch pick up - that would be awful!
Instead, I write a check every month and let someone else handle it.  Is Lowes/Home Depot putting the local lawn care service people out of business because you can also buy the stuff for the DIY crowd in a store?  Is Lowes/Home Depot "Lapping" your local landscape company?  At least by me, they seem to co-exist very nicely - the home improvement stores are always busy and there are plenty of landscapers in my area making what I assume to be a good living as they are out there year after year.

Regardless of whether I'd prefer it or not, it seems that it'll just scale with cost and access. The collateral costs of deploying hardware versus signing into something hosted on AWS doesn't compare and Cloud services lend themselves to recurring revenue which is the emerging frontier of nearly everything.

But this is true of every single 'DIY' option as well.
Wifi bulbs? WEP/WPA1 and likely not long from now WPA2 are going to be obsolete and not supported on Wifi - replace your bulbs.
You current computer is no longer able to run the overarching software, or is at best unsafe to do so.
Your hub/bridge/device wont be updated and can't support new features (or additional hardware) or will even get killed off (Sonos first gen, Hue bridge v1 coming up (down?) in 2 weeks) for many of it's features at least, if not completely.
Oh, and it doesn't need to be a 'few thousand' : that will depend a LOT on the setup, plus there's a more or less permanent discount program in place for older systems getting hardware upgrades with C4 (and others).

The answer to this thread is no, Control4 is not getting lapped by open source solutions. But to think that a community based project couldnt eventually do it is silly.
The community based projects biggest strength and weakness will be that it tries to do too much because it needs to fit so many people's use cases. So in the end it will do a lot of things pretty good but none great. Control4 and other commercial products strength and weakness will be that it only supports a sub set of devices and integrations but will do them very well. I have always felt that Control4 has done the best of the home automation companies at trying to create really good 3rd party support for popular devices.

    cloud based = revenue
without opening a can of worms - they could sell a license for cameras (akin to Synology) and do cloud recording and get it baked into their c4 ecosystem.  I'd figure they could build it from scratch or better yet, just pay a license fee and white label another solution on the market
gives c4/dealers another revenue stream, enhances features in the system, people are used to paying for cloud/camera services (Ring, etc) so it is not a far fetched idea.
if you want to keep it local with your own NVR you'll miss out on some features.  pay to play.
c4 can give me 1% of sales on this subscription plan for this idea.

Always shocks me.  I’ve used 2 different NVRs and cameras from 6 manufacturers and never had issues.  Features are weak but just to see a live stream has worked 100% of the time
hate to say it - have another dealer look at it.  If the cameras have exposed rtsp feeds it should be fairly simple

The person on the internet may be able to have a better reputation than a local dealer concerned about brands and market competition.

You really think most dealers are doing 1-2 full systems a year? They would barley be listed online.  I live in a small market and I have done 3 in the last 4 months.

Maybe someone could start a service to check the credentials of the checker.  Say, $300.

I'm not a dealer but cant understand why folks want to sit on a forum and do bid reviews and bid audits for free?

CTMatthew reacted to ejn1 in New Installation
This type of "check over my bid" thread seems to be getting more common.  Never could quite understand why some dealers take the time to offer detailed back and forth other than being extremely generous.   Maybe a new category should be created called "check my dealer proposal"  and then folks could pay one of the experts in this forum 1-2 hours of their time to audit the proposal for robustness.   On a large several thousand dollar project, this could be money well spent! kind of like hiring a home inspector when buying a new home, eg check my builders work   and then if the person decided to hire the expert for the job, the 1-2 hours could be credited to them.
    Just a thought.

You'll notice a theme in your feedback is imploring you to express what you actually want to accomplish and/or what you think might be wrong with the proposals you've received.
An example of a useful question might be: "I really value high-quality audio and I want music throughout my home. My dealer has proposed Sonos, but I'm concerned that this system will not live up to my expectations. Am I worrying over nothing or is there another solution that might better meet my needs?"
What you've basically done is cut and paste a restaurant's menu and asked "Whadda ya think, food-wise?"
