Makes sense.  I didn't intend my comment to come across as critical.

This is one of my pet peeves - why not have read only access to connections like IR, audio, video, etc in Composer HE?  Same thing with light switches/dimmers bound to keypads.  Why keep end users in the dark on this when some of this information can be crucial to programming your own system in Composer HE?  Same thing with IP addresses of devices - why not show what C4 is using for IP addresses to help you troubleshoot something like an IP address that got changed?  You can see the IP address and change this in some drivers - for example for a Hue bridge. In some drivers you can see but not change - like in the HTI Roku driver.  In other drivers and/or C4 connections you are totally in the dark.
At least with audio zones on Matrix amps you can see the zone name in the Monitoring tab on Composer HE - where it shows Output Settings - Output Zone 1 (Office) or whatever.

I have older C4 dimmers and six buttons both inside and outside of my unheated pool cabana.  They have stood up to the humidity and also -25C temps in the winter.

I've been testing and developing drivers for media players for the past 15 years now and have come to find some preferences.  This all depends on the user though and i'll try to summarise it here.
    Kaldeiscape
Pros Highest quality Easiest to use Highest quality movie store Event feedback is by far the best Server / Client model means that you can have multiple clients access the same library throughout the home. Control4 driver supports library browsing and is smart enough to select the first unused client available in that room Cons Requires seperate server to client Most expensive Bluray discs need to be inserted into a Vault for playback of digital copies (due to legal complications) Zappiti
Pros Hardware can playback every codec/container/format i have thrown at it including 4k HDR Bluray ISOs with menu Storage can be on your own NAS or on internal HDD (upto 16tb on the Mini i have) They have a NAS / Ripper if you want something easy to backup your own content. Control4 driver supports library brownsing Cons Navigation through Control4 doesn't provide cover art through menu's (only on individual movie page) - This may change in the future if the API changes to support it. Event feedback is not as detailed as Kodi or Kaleidescape. LIbrary is on the client meaning you have to maintain multiple libraries if you have multiple clients. Kodi
Pros Its software so you can install on various forms of supported hardware depending on your requirements! From as low end as a raspberry pi To a high end HTPC Storage can be on your own NAS or on internal HDD. Event feedback is fantastic Control4 driver supports library browsing. Cons Experience can vary depending on hardware it is installed on Requires user to maintain it LIbrary is on the client meaning you have to maintain multiple libraries if you have multiple clients. Plex
Pros Its software so you can install on various forms of supported hardware. From as low end as a raspberry pi To a high end HTPC Server / Client model means that you can have multiple clients access the same library throughout the home.  Different users can get access to different content as well! Control4 driver supports library browsing. Cons Client / Server model Server needs to be extremely powerful as it needs to transcode content so lower end clients can play it back.  As such experience can vary depending on hardware it is installed on Requires user to maintain it Event feedback is not as detailed as Kodi or Kaleidescape.
At this point in time my personal preference is Zappiti.  If i wasn't invested into Kodi at my own home i would invest in Zappiti myself and will be what i recommend to integrators who want to find a replacement for Dune.

zaphod got a reaction from tdougray in Review of all streaming services from a C4 perspective
One thing that I would find very useful is a table that shows all of the streaming services that are out there and shows how well they integrate with C4 and all of the pros/cons of these services.  Personally I use Spotify and I think it would be hard to get me to switch, but it might be nice to see all of the various options in one place.  Is there any such list available?

You can use Roku to playback Plex and it has very good driver integration with C4 as Roku is a very good API. And Roku has almost every app that you need - Netflix, Amazon Video, Youtube, Disney+, etc.
You haven't mentioned those other services, but presumably some of your family members will be using those.  Especially if you have any young'uns.

zaphod got a reaction from msgreenf in What is the point of Alexa?
Techincally it always just plays from the Echo - you need a physical connection to get it into C4.
In my instance it will play the music on the Echo device named "Kitchen Echo". In my instance this is an Echo Dot connected to an 8 zone matrix amp in my kitchen via a 3.5mm to RCA cable so it will play via distributed audio.  But it is kind of a local-distributed audio as I have a second matrix amp as I didn't want to run several hundred feet of speaker wires back to my main rack.  This is actually the second Echo in the Kitchen, I also have a 5" Echo Show in the Kitchen so that I can get visual feedback and see people at my door.
I have another Echo Dot connected to another 8 zone matrix in my main rack that feeds other rooms.  And I have another Echo Dot connected to a 4 zone matrix amp in my office that feeds other rooms.

    Same wiring. No additional work.
For 3 ways, if you have a 3 way light in place now, then its just replacing the dimmer on one switch and the other end install a aux keypad. the yellow is the traveler the other is to Neutral.
. The instructions included could not be more clear.

. If he is saying he needs to install wire for the 3-way then just put a dimmer in 1 location and the other put a configurable keypad.

So this then requires a second API for that specific service.  In other words, you would have to be able to hit the Samsung TV API to choose the YouTubeTV app and then switch to the YouTubeTV API, tell it to tune into "CNBC" or whatever.  That would be difficult as I am not so sure that those types of APIs exist for services like YouTubeTV.  It is kind of analagous to be able to tell Netflix to start playing the show "The Crown".

It also depends on what your audio source is going to be.  If it will be a native C4 source or Spotify then you will need more audio feeds on the controller.  But if you will use other sources like an Echo device then you don't have to worry about as many feeds coming from the C4 controller.
Depending on your AV setup then you may want more than one controller to have IR control and OSD in additional rooms.

zaphod got a reaction from South Africa C4 user in New Home, Control4 Infra present. Looking for the cheapest way to get it activated? Also curious about SDKs
I don't think that's the case at all.  This forum is comprised of techno-geeks that are enthusiasts and dealers.  I have to think that we are a very small minority of Control4 end-users.  Many of us wish we could do more with the system but we understand why Control4 has a dealer-model.  In order to do everything yourself you would have to be in the top 1% (or maybe top 0.1%) in terms or technology literacy to be able to confiure everything and troubleshoot why something goes wrong (like an IP address changed because a router rebooted or you changed type of router).
There are reasons why you may want to have other devices on the network for Control4, or at least have a way of crossing the network onto Control4.  For example, you may want to control a TV or an Audio-Video receiver with IP control, or you may want to use an Alexa device for voice control.
And I don't know why people are having a fit over $500.  Here in Toronto you can't get anyone to come to your house to do anything for less than $200, that includes a dishwasher repairman who taks 5 minutes to change a gasket.  The OP has a few thousand dollars worth of hardware.  It is going to take a bit of money to get things up and running.  But spending $500 to get several thousand dolalrs of equipment up and running is a good deal.

The Control4 dimmer switches are worth a fair bit of money.  I belive the MSRP for them is about $150 for each dimmer.  Once you get everything up and running it is awesome.  You can use music services and start music from streaming services on your phone and send them to your speakers.  All of the devices on the Control4 system, including AV devices can be controlled from any Control4 UI - and that included keypads, touchpads, dimmer switches, the Control4 app on iOs, Android, and Windows.
The time and effort (and hassle) to pull out all of the C4 stuff will be way more than $500 and then you have to replace this stuff with other equipment.

zaphod got a reaction from Matt Lowe in Changed WIFI Router
I think it depends on the driver.  With some of them you can set the IP yourself, with others that has to be done by the dealer.
But heed the device of setting up DHCP reservations in your router so that they stay fixed - at least until you change your router again.
