I think it's more than fair to ask for basic things such as alphabetizing which should have been implemented years ago.  Any user who is using programming will be utilizing these features, not every user has color lighting or knows anything about proxies, etc. Going through a list of macros and Voice Commands in Composer that is completely random seems very dated.  If the new OS is not able to support old code/hardware to run equipment then the new code/hardware should be able to address this code change as well.  I personally have no interest in the items you mentioned but would readily welcome better organization in Composer.  Right now, Composer seems a bit behind the times when you can't even organize certain lists in Composer to find what you need without scrolling through an entire list.
Yes I have emailed Control4 about this previously.

I think the poster's point is that the entire system can't be upgraded, even though the HC800 is just performing an ancillary function.  Like you can't upgrade the top of rack switch because one of the servers in the rack is EOL.
I don't see any problem with sunsetting 10 year old stuff, but I can understand finding annoyance with this result.

No one is forced to do anything with control4 so why is the response of “if you don’t want to upgrade don’t” an actual argument to make on why control4 would or would not decide to repurpose hardware so it doesn’t have to be trashed? There is precedence for them leaving hardware on an old revision and it still functioning in new systems.
I have said I think the hc800 has been supported as a main controller for plenty of time but if there is a way to help customers/dealers and not have something end up in a landfill when it can be repurposed it might be worth Control4 doing everyone a favor.

I'm not sure that's actually how it will work. Because you'll still need the dealer to add the instances of the drivers, but what it allows for is not a unique driver for every model device

I agree - but I also don't think you can look at it as components. It's an ecosystem and everything has to be able to play well together.

It’s more of the issue of the maturation of home automation versus generational.  The future is voice, motion, occupancy and fencing.  The idea is to automate systems so that a separate device ( remote, app, etc) is unnecessary for many common things. This circumvents remotes, switches, button presses etc.
Walk into a room and the lights come on, the lights stay on as long as you’re in the room, temperature adjusts, potentially your music plays and any additional commands can be issued while you’re shaving (voice) etc. The fencing piece adds that the system knows it’s you versus another household member.
Hate to blow up what little we know at the moment, but it appears that the upcoming series of remotes will incorporate voice at least for AV to start.

I think these comments are at best incomplete. 1.5 years ago SmartThings was not leading edge in DIY. SmartThings issues were/are due to the mostly non-local processing. Hubitat was created in 2017 to run devices locally because of the poor reliability of SmartThings. If your DIY knowledge is 1.5 years old then you really are not up to date in knowing how the system performs.
As far as protocols go, notice that C4 is integrating Z-Wave into the new Core processors. Z-Wave can perform well, but there are lots of points of potential issues. Hubitat got screwed by Silicon Labs. Hubitat was the first controller with SL's new 700 series chip and it had a lot of issues that were not corrected until this year. And even today some issues remain. I'm pretty sure those issues played a role in SL's fairly quick release of the 800 series chipset. Any C4 dealer wishing to use Z-Wave devices is going to have to come up to speed on those potential issues. Z-Wave is very sensitive to the mesh quality. Z-Wave as a low frequency protocol is also sensitive to the number and frequency of messages being transmitted. The devices that cause issues with a mesh are the "chatty" ones, like power reporting plugs. Z-Wave has a couple security protocols that should be avoided except for locks and doors as they add significant overhead to the mesh. You'll need to pay attention to repeaters. Having said that, there are some great Z-Wave devices that offer new or alternative options to dealers. My primary lighting is RadioRA 2. But Jasco makes some nice dimmers with a motion sensor built in. Perfect for bathrooms. Zooz has some nice offerings like heavy duty plugs that you can add to appliances to determine running state. They also have a couple nice relays that can be useful in things like garage door automation. Ring makes some nice sensors that can be added to any Z-Wave system.
SmartThings was underpowered due to placing most of the processing on the cloud. They are currently trying to make things truly local as they shut their cloud down. Will they succeed? Who knows. It seems your poor experiences are also based on using Z-Wave lighting. Z-Wave is certainly more prone to issues (see above). Hubitat has no problem running more than 100 devices. I'm close to 200. About 1/2 of them are Lutron. Only about 10 are Z-Wave. As said above, anyone can get RadioRA 2/3 devices these days. Training is easy and free. To address more than 75 device in Caséta issue, the solution is the same for C4, Hubitat, Home Assistant. Add a second Smart Bridge Pro. It makes the Lutron phone app a bit clunky, that's about the only issue.
At the end of the day these systems are all fairly capable tools. As I said before, C4 has no DIY comparison in AV, I really like my SR260. But on non-AV there are highly capable competitors that C4 dealers should know about even if they don't have any desire to use or sell on a day to day basis. As of today, IMO today it is easier to implement sophisticated lighting automation in Hubitat than C4. That doesn't make C4 a bad product. As I also said previously, competition is good.
Finally, different customers have different needs. Another great C4 attribute is support. My in laws are in the process of changing out a bunch of 20 year old lighting and AV and I had no problem recommending C4 to them. They have a Savant system in their main house and they've had a fair number of problems. I'm pretty sure a significant contributor is their dealer not having the process of working with technophobes in their 80s down. I don't think they'll have that same issue with C4, but if they do the breadth of the dealer network is available to address the issues.

the usual suspects are going to come in here and do the usual comparisons about cars or luxury items instead of actually giving you the reasons.
To make things simple there are really 2 user groups for control4:
1 - the people with more money than time: they hired an integrator because they wanted to have some cool technology in their home and be able to control it all from 1 place. if control4 is being used in their home it probably wasnt their choice, it was the integrators. the technology in the background is irrelevant. its the integrator that matters. if the integrator thinks there is another product than could do what they want better or easier then they would have it. the customer doesnt care if the solution is open or closed (C4). they just want it to work.
2 - people with some money and some time -  this is the group who if there was a DIY (open) solution that out there that could do all they want they would probably use it instead of C4. The fact is though if you want to have a hard button remote that can control all of your audio and video together easily there is just not anything on the DIY side that comes close (and on the custom side there isnt anything with the user base and price point of C4). And even if there was a product, the price of an EA-1 and SR-260 is not that much different than what logitech's last solution was going for. Yes there is the cost of an integrator but there are varying levels of what involvement you need from them if you have the time and knowledge. C4 has a great product at a great price for these types of users.

I'd do it again.  Countless doors opened from that one decision.  I actually got the idea from watching a documentary on Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs.  He took the subway a few hours each way, every day, and worked at Def Jam records under Russel Simmons, for free.  I'm not a Puff fan by any stretch, but it was inspiring.  The US was in the midst of the housing collapse of '08 also.  A good number of A/V and Automation firms were going under.

I was in my early 20's, and felt like the gamble would pay off.

It did, handsomely.  It was ultimately the right decision for me.

Just like sneaking Pinot Grigio into Bon Iver shows is the right decision for you.

I wouldn't personally call Unifi consumer gear... It is a step up but agree with others it not in the same league as Ruckus.   But it's ALOT less expensive and they have progressed their access point models a lot in recent years plus the Unifi software interface and APP is better than Ruckus.   The gap is shrinking and not sure today I would spend 3-4x for Ruckus in a home setting.  I have Ruckus in a large home and its great.  I have a Unifi UDM in a smaller home with a built in Access Point and it has worked brilliantly.  I had actually picked up an R610 like @chopedogg88 and was going to install in place of the UDM AP and then I didnt do it given the Unifi performance and all in one convenience of the UDM.   My advice is dont get sucked into the Unifi immediate response of it is problematic,  do more research.  its like saying a corvette is a crappy sports car because there is a McLaren option available.   Also, Ruckus tech support is only better if you buy (annually) their paid support otherwise not much better than Unifi.

Uh, not only does "not truly a controller-based Wi-Fi" system make no sense wrt UniFi, but roaming and handoff in an 802.11 session doesn't involve or require a controller.  It's between the client and the APs.  But go on about I'm the one who doesn't know what they're talking about.  And i'm sure you'll post your data showing the comparative handoff quality.

wnpublic reacted to DAVIDN in Chime integrations
The Chime app is a standalone app (C4 Intercom) and runs on IOS, so yes- you should be able to have it ring and display video on any device running the app, including an iPad.
HOWEVER- If you don't have any C4 screens or C4 audio, I would suggest a Ring doorbell instead.  I went from a Ring Elite to the Chime and I'm seriously considering going back.  The Chime is nowhere near as intuitive as the Ring, nor is it as flexible.  The Ring app makes it simple to configure all aspects of the device- snooze motion alerts, change sensitivity, set motion zones, view past events with video, etc.  The Chime is just far less sophisticated.  Or at least less sophisticated to the common person with C-HE available.
Motion alerts are inconsistent and have to be configured in C4.  My installer still has to configure something because I have zero access to past video or motion events.  That's right- a video doorbell that I can't see any history.  Who knows why.
Oh, and the video quality of the Chime sucks in comparison to Ring.

In practice, they've become an extremely expensive kitchen Timer, and alarm clock...

You're much better off with a T4, and a cheap echo for voice. None of these 3rd party systems are even remotely ready for proper home automation (its a suckfest even if you load the lights and such directly into them using their dedicated drivers).

I’m guessing you don’t live in the Bay Area of California?  The people with that money for a house are all tech people, or tech adjacent, and if you say your house is on a home automation platform, they are gonna come look at it. 7 of 8 bidders either inspected the server closet themselves, or sent an IT person to do so.
