Good thread and also like the new website!!  Muj does some great work- he helped get my system up and running remotely after a really bad install from a local dealer/installer. And he does a quality job as you can see from the pics above and on his website!

    This worked for me:

I initially tried to use "PLAYING_AUDIO_DEVICE," but couldn't get the programming to trigger.  Thanks for the tip!

Make that one more recommendation for Muj!! He’s awesome and can do just about anything you need remotely.  We had a really bad initial install and I couldn’t wait to dump the original dealer. I connected with Muj and I can’t recommend him highly enough. Before you give up on Control4, I would give a remote dealer from this forum the opportunity to see what they can do. I was nervous at first but once we started the process I have never looked back!

Sorry but Control4 isn’t a DIY platform. If you believe it is then go else where. Right to repair doesn’t make sense tbh.

What some of you also have to remember is our livelyhood relies on us selling and programming control4, not for a bunch of morons to think they know what they are doing and feel entitled to software they think they should have.

if you want the software, open a c4 dealership.

    rant over, goodbye.

I don't work for C4 lol im just stating from a UK perspective ofc things in the states are and will be different.
ive seen the horror stories and ive fixed the horror stories and i know how hard it must be to trust someone else, its why i tell my clients do your research and don't always go for the most expensive or the cheapest. One thing that always helps is ask your potential installer to see projects of a similar caliber to yours and if they cant then its a no.
The only thing splitting is my head being up all night programming crestron and prepping for projects. But no one wants to talk about that LOL
I for one support all my projects, heck i still have systems on 2.5.3 and theres no real need to upgrade them client is happy how it works and just needs regular maintenance. I have keypads and Touch screens ive taken out of upgrades spare for her. So, i do the best i can where i can, within reason. Even disposing broken hardware, its done the way it should be rather than tossing it.
Harware sales brings in nothing, its all about customer support and keeping your systems in tip top condition.
Every project has a handover and once this handover is completed, and document signed by customer any further work is then either paid for hourly or paid from the service contract, if work exceeds service contract hours then there is a charge.
Aslo, sorry if i offended anyone you're not morons. i was just giving my perspective at the end of the day I run a Home Automation company, if laws came in to prevent me from stopping doing my job id be screwed.
    Thanks

    agreed
I mean I am ok with the dealer model - I knew it coming in and made my decision and do not regret it.  But after being involved with c4 for the last 8 years, I can clearly say there are moron integrators too 🙂 Not Muj directly but just in general there are enough horror stories to know there are bad end users and bad integrators.  That is getting a bit off topic but...

but how is that a fair comparison?  You stated that putting Unifi APs in every room is better then one Ruckus AP.  Well no kidding.  Using one AP to cover an entire house is like using a smart car to deliver amazon packages - ain't gonna work...

It’s a great system but the quality of your installer will make or break your experience. We had someone that assured me they had experience with programming, lighting, etc.  That turned out to not be the case.
Once we finished with that debacle, we found @mujtaba.khokhar on here and he has been doing remote programming for us. He has been awesome. Suddenly, everything started working as it should and things were not activating on their own. He ended up having to do a lot of programming corrections but we’ve been up and running pretty well ever since.
Whatever you do, make sure you have a good quality installer.  The levels that C4 advertises on their website is about volume not quality.
If your installer isn’t up to par, Muj or any number of the awesome and helpful folks on these boards can help, are usually cheaper and more qualified and faster.
One of the great advantages of C4, you can change your programmer/dealer very easily. Our old Crestron system was locked down to the original installer so we were stuck with him (he was actually really good, just very expensive).
You can do most anything with C4 and a knowledgeable programmer but the interfaces on the touch screens/app are locked in. We did customization in our Crestron system, paid a lot for it and frankly, like the C4 app better. It’s intuitive, easy to use and because it’s a bit more standardized, ends up being cheaper.
With most other systems, the dealers make their money on the programming so even with Crestron’s new system, they’re always looking for those higher margins and the cost really adds up. I found C4  to be more reasonably priced (not cheap, just less expensive for the same basic functionality). Crestron sells the ability to do anything with their system. While there may be some really rare things that you might be able to do vs C4 but I would be surprised to see how many people ever use those things vs just getting the more expensive system in case they ever want to do them. I haven’t found much that C4 can’t do.
    Hope that helps a bit.
Make sure you have a good installer (did I say that already?)

I was able to associate the 3 custom command buttons with device specific commands which already had the (10) installation modes listed so I made mode 1 2.35 x1 and mode 2 16x9. Once I have some content in another format such as 2.4x1 I will assign it to the 3rd. Thanks for the great help everyone!

It certainly is possible, but rather dependent on how much of the system was left behind when the original owner moved out.  You will also need to make sure that you have a Control4 customer account, and that those details are added to your 'new' system.
Is your dealer the original installer of the system ?
Do you already know that you want/need to make changes to the programming ?  Maybe you have new TV's, or you need to add your own music streaming services for example.  In time, there are probably quite a few changes that you will want to make to personalize the system, but are there things that have to be done now to make it functional (that you know of) ?
There are a number of very good remote programmers on here - most things can be done remotely, especially if you are able to assist by pressing a few buttons when needed, or making sure that a cable is plugged in correctly etc.
