Anish reacted to South Africa C4 user in OS3 Slow to Connect
Performance on my local network has been great since the first release after OS3.0 (not sure if that was 3.0.1 or 3.1.0) until a few days ago when the iOS app was updated. Now it is hit and miss. Sometimes around 1 second and sometimes closing in on 10 seconds (with Experience Buttoms struggling to load).
On cellular, it is disaster out but this has been a known problem in South Africa for sometime now.

I feel like every Control4 OS release has someone in the first week saying “app is so much faster”
Then a few weeks later someone saying their app is super slow. You can’t discount individual networks and phone configurations in all of this.
I have a control 4 system on 2.9 and a Crestron system on the same network. Apps for both open under a second and a half on my iPhone X locally.
Between 2.53 and 2.9 I’ve never seen the local connection take longer then 2 seconds.
This is all using the Built in garbage ISP router as well.

Am not teasing you at all, am just telling you OS 2.0 C4 app on my Xiaomi MiMix2 opens a lot faster than my iPhone XS Max Pro, this my observation also works a lot faster after refresh navigator command.

I agree with everything said above. I have a wall mounted iPad mini that I use in the kitchen as whole house control, as well as local control of lights, shades, and living room TV. With 2.0, the app was always instantaneous when running the iPad in guided access mode. I would press the home button, and the screen would wake up and app would already be connected. Compare that to 3.0 app, and from pressing the home button I usually get the spinning wheel as the app connects and on most days it's usually 3-5 seconds. What makes it even worse, and I see this with the iPhone app as well, is that the app doesn't remember the last screen used, and instead goes to the home screen. So then I have to navigate back to the control the last item I was using. Am I the only one that sees this issue?
I also have a Lutron RadioRA 2 system integrated, but with the separate Lutron app, it's very fast, probably 1-2 second to launch the first time. If the app is already running on the iOS device, it's almost instant. I also used to have a RTI system for years, and used the same iPad mini, and with the RTI app, again it was pretty much instantaneous. So the Control4 OS3 app is definitely slower by several seconds. Don't get me wrong, I still use it, but the experience is not as user friendly. My wife even complains, and says it used to be much faster.
Just my $0.02.

The 2.0 app was faster, usually instantaneous in fact. The only time there was a delay was when it needed to update after a settings change (refresh navigators, etc). But in normal use it launched nearly instantly. I assume others have the same recollection and experience? If not, perhaps I was just lucky. I do not know.
The 3.0 app is a lot better than it used to be, for sure. But still takes 1-3 seconds, and often can be longer. The first time I launched it today it took over 10 seconds. I suspect when it takes a really long time it's due to something being paged out of RAM on the controller, or any of a million other possibilities (since I don't know for sure what's happening during that app startup). Thankfully those kinds of delays are not the norm. But the end result for me has been I've lost faith that the app will be available when I need it the same way a remote or button is. Others of course may not care. But I'm not happy with it and I really hope we eventually get back to the way it was with 2.x.
Incidentally, based on your comments I tried Lutron, the iOS Home App and C4 and C4 is the slowest each time. Lutron and Home start under a second (Home is basically instant), but C4 takes 1-3 seconds. As before, this is somewhat subjective as many factors can contribute to slowness, but I can at least attest to C4 being the slowest of these in my case. Things get worse when you look at real world scenario. I can open up the Home app or Lutron and turn one of my lights on and off way faster than I can using the C4 app. By way faster it might be 2 or 3 seconds faster, which doesn't seem like a lot. But it feels like forever and makes me not want to even bother half the time.

My experience has been consistent ever since 3.0 was released in that it is slower to connect than 2.x was. 3.0 was the slowest and later releases have improved things. So clearly C4 is aware of these issues and working to improve them. As a developer, I know from experience that it may not be as simple to fix this as some may suggest. There may be many different factors contributing to this which make it harder to solve than we'd like to think. But since reports are that the Android version is faster, that gives me hope that it's just a matter of time before this is worked out. Fingers crossed! 🙂
Having said all of that, I find myself way less likely to even bother to use the app these days because the delay is so annoying. I'm speaking of local network connections, mind you. The two to three second (sometimes longer) delay is enough of a paper cut that I just don't want to bother. It feels like it would be faster to just walk over to the light switch, or touch panel. For me, that makes what otherwise seems like "not a big deal" into a really big deal. This is all subjective of course, others may not mind these delays. But for me it's aggregating.

Is it just me or is OS3 really slow to connect? More so remote but still even local takes forever sometimes. Anyone have any suggestions on how to speed this up?

The OS3 app connects within a second for me. But I'm on android and from what I understand the iOS app is slower.

Crzy to wait half year+ without any words from Control4 when it will be same fast to use as OS 2.10
Clients laughing when need to pay 100 $ for a year subscription and wait 60 seconds to connect, very carefully click on the buttons (cause it reacts so sloooow ) and wait for another 10 seconds to state changes. Comparing to other systems that works just normal, with the same speed as you expect.
And when we sell Control4 screens and controllers (not a cheap product but middle to high level) we earn money for a manufacturer, it is very strange to hear nothing on this connection issues from C4 and ask clients to wait .... hmmm.. don`t know... week, month, year...
p.s. for example in Europe, Control4 works with ABB as KNX partner. ABB touch screens connecting for 5-7 seconds from LTE around the globe and a year subscription cost 3 times less, ask them how

"A long time" is obviously relative and up for interpretation. For me it takes a few seconds locally (it depends on how recently I've had the app open) and remotely it usually takes 5-10 seconds...sometimes maybe a little longer? 60 seconds is crazy.

I upgraded to a CA10 6 months ago and local connections (on a big project) are now phenomenal... about 1 second. And that is (unashamedly) on iOS devices.
Remote connections are easily 30 to 60 seconds which is very annoying and makes my holiday house (almost unreachable remotely). Our issue is local servers (I am told) as we live in South Africa. In theory, we were told this would be resolved in Q1 2020 but that is now history and I suspect COVID-19 will delay any upgrade for sometime. Would be nice to hear from C4 on this though!

Regarding the 60 seconds , For some of us it’s a geographic issue(note not internet speed issue). Control 4 had acknowledged this but still no fix to date. It’s almost 6 months. Maybe they need to refund our 4 sight subscriptions!

It never takes 60 seconds more like between 15 and 30 remote, less local. It’s definitely not a network issue it just slow to connect. Once its connected its fast on response almost Instant its just the initial connection. Honestly it’s not just my system it’s every system that I feel like I work on these days remote connection is so much slower than it used to be even local connection is slow compared to what it used to be. That being said I have not used android but to me that should not matter, if it is a ios only issue than that is something control4 should be addressing or at least acknowledge the issue.

Anish reacted to Costa in OS3 VPN connection issues
Hello Everybody,
It was very helpful to use app via VPN to check some changes and solve troubleshooting consideing that we are C4 dealers.
And it is quite strange to ask to client to pay 99$ to make us possible to connect remotely and even more strange to pay 99$ by ourselves, to make our job
And what is more strange that after installing OS 3.x.x (doesn't remember which one) application was working via VPN remotely for some time and later stopped forever.
So I bet it worked in OS3 and then C4 turned it off, it is very unusual to "simplify" something not from the start but in the middle.
You wrote that you are "currently evaluating bringing back the manual IP address setting to provide a workaround for misconfigured networks" - will it happen this century ?
Maybe we don't know and there is another solution ?

Os 3 with all its added features still has many bugs including this one. Some of us pay for 4sight subscription and still have to wait 45 to 60 seconds to populate the screen which is thereafter extremely laggy. Remote usage of our control 4 system is non functional.
@jakblakwas looking into this.
I am deeply disappointed with oS3.xx as I consider remote operation as a core functionality for my purposes.

I’ve noticed the exact same thing and asked my dealer about it last week. He said it was unlikely to be Control4 related... now I think it is...

Anish reacted to c4Iona in OS 3.1 intranet issue
Unplug the internet router from the ISP modem. Cycle your router, Switch and AP's and see if you still have issues with the ISP device unplugged. If you don't, call your ISP and ask them to re-provision your device so that you get a new IP address and then try with your ISP device plugged into your router.
A DDOS attack will cripple your routers ability to work regardless if the firewall is blocking the offending packets. The whole point is to deny service. That service is both internal and external. Are you running the Unifi network software? What does that tell you?
-
Anish reacted to ekohn00 in OS 3.1 intranet issue
As @C4Iona mentioned, disconnect your router from the Internet. I will assume that your Unifi controller is local. Your home network should be stable. Make sure you're not reaching out to the cloud for anything at this point (DHCP, Cloud controller, C4, etc). The only thing that might look for a connection is DNS, and that should fail. For Unifi and C4 to work in a web browser, you should be using IP addresses for your local network.
With the Internet disconnect, this should all work. Don't even connect the router to the internet until you get your network stable.

Anish reacted to lippavisual in OS 3.1 intranet issue
If you have open ports on your network, now would be the time to find alternative routes to opening those ports.
Otherwise, your firewall should handle a ddos attack pretty easily.

Anish reacted to -defunct- in OS 3.1 intranet issue
It doesn't need an internet connection, unless there are drivers that are causing issues that do require internet.
It does, however, require a stable local network.
