The Smart Home Pro will always be a 'dealer' in Control4 vocabulary.  It's possible that someone other than that dealer (or their staff) actually programmed your system (a subcontracted programmer for example), but unlikely.
I'd be having a word with the AV company that you mentioned as well.  Especially if you actually paid them for this 'dealer's' work.

At the time of my install there was only a serial driver.  It has been nothing less than great and very responsive.  All of my equipment is in the same rack so I haven’t thought about the idea of changing to the IP driver

It certainly is possible, but rather dependent on how much of the system was left behind when the original owner moved out.  You will also need to make sure that you have a Control4 customer account, and that those details are added to your 'new' system.
Is your dealer the original installer of the system ?
Do you already know that you want/need to make changes to the programming ?  Maybe you have new TV's, or you need to add your own music streaming services for example.  In time, there are probably quite a few changes that you will want to make to personalize the system, but are there things that have to be done now to make it functional (that you know of) ?
There are a number of very good remote programmers on here - most things can be done remotely, especially if you are able to assist by pressing a few buttons when needed, or making sure that a cable is plugged in correctly etc.

95% + of all complaints like this that I've ever heard are fixed by one or more of these 3 things :
    1.  Some improvements to the strength/reliability of the zigbee network.  Control4 relies on zigbee communication between devices - for example between a remote control and your processor that issues instructions to devices on the system.
    2.  Some changes to your wi-fi/router setup to improve strength and reliability.  This is the other half of the system backbone that needs to be well designed to ensure that the system functions 24/7.
    3. Some (usually) minor changes to programming to make sure that the system is designed to do what you want it to, when you want it to.  There are several very high quality remote programmers/dealers on this forum who can help you get the best out of your system.  They are almost certainly better than your local guy.
Can you give an example of something that 'rarely works' ?  It might help to begin to diagnose what's going on.

Maybe a little off topic, but it brings up an interesting point or two.
People are often debating if automation really saves us any time at all.....
For people in the household who never program, maintain, update/upgrade, etc   the system.   Yeah, it actually makes their life go a little faster / easier. For the person(s) who are responsible for the former, it is either    They are getting paid to do it (ie, your dealer).   So basically you are paying for convenience, which is exactly what you would expect.   (provided you have a good dealer and are happy with the result) It is a hobby you enjoy.  In this case you are converting time spent on boring repetitive stuff to time spent on tinkering with your HA system.  Not going to save you time, but does change HOW you spend it. So maybe a good decision flow chart would be:
[Likes tinkering, Likes paying for help]   =>   Buy a C4 system.  Then buy a 3 other systems.  Constantly compare them on all the forums
[Hates tinkering, Likes paying for help]  => Buy a C4 system.  Just be happy.
[Likes tinkering, hates paying for help]  =>  Don't buy C4  (or maybe become a C4 dealer yourself).  Buy whatever gear catches your eye.  Enjoy making them work.
[Hates tinkering, hates paying for help]  =>  Go back to re-posting stuff on Facebook.  Forget home automation, you will hate that too.

This is very fair comment.  I'm a Control4 advocate, but I still do exactly what you describe.  C4's handling of intercom and security cameras has always bean a weakness, and so it remains.  My guess is that security cameras can't/won't improve until the next gen of processors.  Having to dumb down modern IP cameras to 720P resolution is a tradeoff that most people don't want or like.  I don't like Sonos integration, but I do like the Sonos app UX.  Intercom looked promising for a moment, but it's clearly a work in progress.  That's a hard sell when so many customers have a baseline that is a highly functional (if poor image quality) Ring camera.
Not just do it - maintain it.  And explain some of the string and sticky tape functionality to the rest of the family.

Actually all you need to do is create a 'room' for the screen and set the room's video endpoint to the controller.

Great suggestion. Just added an old Rpi that I had laying around on to our matrix.  Loaded the Dakboard OS, added in our calendars and a few photos and voila.  My wife thinks it’s fantastic.
